Two hours of beautiful nonsense

Seriously overrated, it's one thing to be a great animator, it's another entirely to be able to tell a coherent story.

But i'm guessing that lack of coherence is what makes him so popular amongst fans.

You mean you couldn't follow the story? Try watching again, maybe with a cup of coffee instead.

reply

This movie is anything but incoherent.

reply

Disagree. I feel it's perfectly rated. Plus, I don't see what's incoherent about it? The plot is easy to follow.

But i'm guessing that lack of coherence is what makes him so popular amongst fans.

Incorrect guess. He's popular for his charming characters, whimsical plots, fantastic animation, environmental morals, and more.

At least he didn't bust out the "the fans of this director much have low IQs" comment that usually follows comments like that. Which I always found funny. The poster will spout off at the mouth about not getting a movie and call fans stupid yet said fans understand said movie just fine. So who's the moron again?

I don't know what world you guys are living in if any of it made any logical sense.

I'm going to give it another try in the near future, as I clearly must be missing something, but this film to me could be summed up as

-girl is annoyed and confused at having to move (no other backstory given)
-girl enters fantasy land with random stuff happening, possibly with some symbolism thrown in
-there's ghosts, and talking frogs, and here's a river God consuming stuff, and now a dragon, and hey, how about a train ride?
-girl leaves fantasy land and we don't know if she is happier now (maybe because she found her parents) or given any proper character arc

That's what I came away with on first viewing. It was lovely to look at, but left me a little cold. At least Alice In Wonderland and Wizard of Oz provided tangible elements to connect the film's fantasy with the film's reality. Ok, the parents were turned into pigs, because they were greedy? Greedy for what exactly, moving house?

Girl trapped in the Spirit world must find a way to survive and escape.

-girl leaves fantasy land and we don't know if she is happier now

She's actually braver now. At the beginning we see she's a scaredy cat. By the end, she's faced witches, spirits, and monsters. Moving to a new place will be a piece of cake for her.

Greedy for what exactly, moving house?

Gorging themselves on food not meant for them.

Fantasy isn't your genre. Stick to Spielberg movies that spell out their themes.

i loved this movie as a kid. my dad took me to the movie theater only a couple times a year and whenever we would go we would pay for one movie and sneak into 2 or 3 more after. I saw this in theaters back in the day when i was 6 and loved it
