Is anyone else bothered by...

...the fact that Kate forgives her friends, when they're effectively responsible for the chain of events leading to her lover's death?

For most of the film their efforts are directed at undermining the relationship, and making him out to be a conniving cad...
though he proves more than once that he genuinely loves her.

Not only do they take it upon themselves to decide what's best for her, the sexual temptation they employ seems especially dirty pool... in Paris, as well as at home.

Is there any indication that some of their antipathy arises from envy?

I thought the romance was very moving and believable, and that the film had many fine moments.
One of my favorites is the scene when he shows her how he uses music to emotionally prepare and inform funeral goers.

I agree. It was entirely their fault. But they didn't mean for him to die... and Kate didn't have any one else to turn to. She wanted to be friends with her friends again. Have some feeling of normality. Its not worth it to hold a grudge forever.

I agree, the fact is they caused his death indirect or not. There's no going back from that. He's dead and it's their fault. No amount of tears or I'm sorrys can change that.

Not worth to hold a grudge forever when you'r friends are the ones who betrayed you and are responsible for the person you loved's death?

With friends like Janine and Molly, who needs enemies??? Yes, I am bothered by the fact that Kate forgave her "friends".

I read somewhere that forgiving others is a gift you to give to yourself, not to anyone else. It allows you to let go of hurt rather than carry it around with you for the rest of your life. I realize now that Kate was setting a good example for her new son by letting go of the past and not "throwing the baby out with the bath water" by disowning friends who made an obviously bad mistake which led to something they could have NEVER expect would happen. They had Kate's best interests at heart, but went about things in a very bad way. They admitted their mistake and asked for forgiveness.

It's amazing what people can forgive each other for - I've seen much worse forgiven.
