What about other lesbian films?

A lot of people in the lesbian community say that this isn't one of the best lesbian films, not even close. Does anyone know of any others that they consider to be better?

reply

If you mean films that actually focus on issues surrounding homosexuality, I'd recommend "Better Than Chocolate", it's really good. Of course, if you mean movies with a few lesbian characters, there's millions - "The Hours", "American Pie 2", "Chasing Amy", etc.

Tipping The Velvet you will love! Also *beep* amal, Gia, Aimee & Jaguar, and Heavenly Creatures.

reply

*bloody censorship* Åmål, aka Show Me Love (stupid US title) isn't even filmed
on location; it's shot in Trollhättan. But I agree, it's a brilliant movie.

Bound, High Art, If These Walls Could Talk 2, Boys on the Side, Personal Best, What's Cooking.

Ok, first of all - angelina jolie- gorgeous- 2nd, I've never seen foxfire, and was curious as to what the plot was, especially the part which involves the whole lesbian theme.
I also liked all over me, but Gia, was, by far, my favorite

try Jaded and Trois

i recomend...MUHOLLAN D DR. is a very very very good film!!!1... and there is to lesbian scenes with naomi watts and laura hearring... both very hot!!!....

reply

You're all missing a great one from 1983 called "Lianna." It's about an unhappily married woman who realizes she's a lesbian and actually leaves her loveless marriage to live her new life. Very well done by John Sayles. A lot of guts to release it in the early 80's too.

"Bravo Stone, bravo."

Definetly MULHOLLAND DRIVE! That is like the BEST movie ever! I love it. The story is so sad :( but the lesbian scenes are VERY HOT! I also love this movie (Lost and Delirious) and *beep* Amal, guys what about Showgirls cmon! Gina Gershon and Elizabeth Berkley, LOL! But anyway, if you havnt seen Mulholland drive RENT IT!

reply

Definitely Mulholland Drive. It's my favorite movie ever hands down (The plot is complicated like a puzzle, and you may be confused after watching the movie. But look up and and pieces will come together.

Here are some of the ones I have watched and would recommend.

1. Mulholland Drive

2. Imagine Me & You

3. The L Word (especially the first season)

4. Fire (Indian film made in 1996)

5. Intimates (a.k.a. "Ji Sor" - a Chinese foreign film)

Enjoy! :)

Please! "Kissing Jessica Stein" is NOT a really good movie. In fact, the two main characters are NOT lesbians: one of them is bisexual, and the other one is heterosexual.

I'd really rather "The true about Jane". It's an excellent film about teenager confussion and fear. And "Lost & Delirious", of course, is one of the best films I've seen.

reply

Can you tell me were I can buy The truth about Jane? I'm from holland...

reply

I don't know..I downloaded..It's very cool..especially if u r in that age..when I saw that movie..was a lifechanging experience..bcause..I was going throught the same issues that Jane!...It's a good movie to show ur parents if u r thinking coming out!...I haven't came out yet..but that movie is in my plans..someday...when I get enough balls to do it!

In the meantime..I recommend a Chinese movie called Saving Face..I liked it!..and Imagine Me And You too...anyway..I have a lot of movies in mind..but u have mention a lot..so a do not want to repeat...maybe My Summer Of Love..just for Emily Blunt...I really like her!..and Loving Anabelle..It's kind the type of this movie..but at leats there is a happy ending!

And for Tv Shows..of course I recommend The L Word..but also Sugar Rush..it last only 2 seasons..but for me..is the best lesbian Tv Show ever made..even better than TLW!...just an opinion!

If u want..u can see Girltrash! and 3Ways..they're online-shows..u can watch them on youtube!...they're awesome!..completely hillariuous!....enjoy!

Oranges Are Not The Only Fruit is a brilliant film about a young girl who grows up in a tiny town in the middle of Northern England, in an as fundamentalist Christian upbringing as you can get. She is going to become a missionary (though she wants to go to Oxford), and has spent her whole life doing 'God's work' and spreading the 'word of the Lord'. Until she meets Melanie.

It's a wonderful, gripping film based on an equally amazing novel-- the acting is terrific, the plot is great. I loved it.

Kissing Jessica Stein and But I'm A Cheerleader are terrible movies. I wouldn't recommend them.

reply

I LOVED Kissing Jessica Stein! Haven't seen Cheerleader though.

To the original poster - I don't consider this a lesbian film at all, and so I don't consider the 'lesbian community' to have much jurisdiction over whether it's good or not (I'm a lesbain, before you get all 'ah you're homophobic' on me). It's about love, not lesbians. And, technically, If I'm going to label myself, it'd be much the same as Paulie. I'm desperately in love, and intend to spend the rest of my life with a woman. I'm don't love girls. I love one person who happens to be a girl and generally find myself more attracted to women because I find them more attractive, personality wise. If I'd found a man who made me feel the same way, I'd spend my life with him. But, I digress. Lost and Delirious is probably the single best film on human sexual attraction (okay, okay, so it ties with Secretary) that I've ever seen, and I have no problem with people liking or disliking it. Just don't call yourself a community and gang up on it.

And I am noting down every film that has been said in this thread. If I don't like them, I will come for you all.

Ha ha ha.

I'm straight...so I don't know if I am able to say which particular "lesbian" film is better or not. One of my best friends is a lesbian, so I have seen alot of them though...I loved Kissing Jessica Stein(I own it), but I don't think it's a lesbian film...neither is Boy's Don't Cry because Brandon considers himslef a man. So I guess my favorite lesbian film is But I'm a cheerleader and "An unexpected love".

Don't forget My Summer Of Love and Producing Adults (Lapsia ja aikuisia) I think they're good.

Pheobe9887..."I'm straight...so I don't know if I am able to say which particular "lesbian" film is better or not." Christ how lame is that?! In other words: gay people are not able to say which (particular) straight film is better or not.
Stop stupidity be aware right?
