Hugh Jackman takes a total stereotype of a character and gives it soul

I think I've seen dozens of romantic comedies in which a lothario is portrayed as finally falling in love, but the character of Eddie really gives it heart and dimension. The big giveaway is the scene in the yoga studio when he sees "Becca"--that's got to be one of the most tragically romantic moments ever to occur in a light comedy. It's very effective how slowly and sensitively his romantic history is revealed, with skilled writing and skilled acting, whereas Ashley Judd's story is just put out there in a crude postfeminist cartoon characterization.

Although Ashley Judd is the more obvious main character, the slow revelation of Eddie's heartbreak ultimately becomes the most interesting and emotionally gripping thread in the story. His part in their dialogue the night before he sleeps "with her in his arms without copping a feel--well, maybe one" is also brilliant.

You--lighten up. You--big trouble. You--get in the car.

Beautifully analyzed and written yourself. Yes, even though we only see Becca for that brief moment, it is poignant. Possibly this whole slow introduction to Eddie is what makes me forgive the writers for having him run off when it is revealed that Jane posed as the mysterious scientist. It seemed so out of character to me for laissez faire-Eddie. Yet it would show that he had different feelings for Jane, that he felt things much more deeply than people -- and she -- gave him credit for. And, of course, I have to excuse it on the basis that something is needed to get them together. Deus ex machina. But they also say many men feel break-ups very deeply, possibly more so than women. So opening himself to love again required a leap of faith for Eddie as well.

Well put. I have to agree.

I also think the casting dept did a great job with Becca. They made her soft and adorable vs glossy and royal. Well done.

"What's in those things Bert?"........"A few household items in the proper proportions."
