Just finished watching the movie today. (The manga was great so I was hoping the movie would be just as good)
The WORST thing in the movie was the acting X____________X
the actors were so bad.
I thought the movie itself was decent, but I agree the acting was pretty bad. The actors didn't seem to be the least bit interested in what was going on.

shareIt's not "bad" acting - it's stylized acting. You see it everywhere in Asian cinema. Without getting into too much theory, it has to do with character archetypes that have been in existence in the cultures for centuries.
Ex: The "beard stroke" motion that Gordon Liu repeats as Pai Mei in Kill Bill 2 is a gesture that correlates directly to a common gesture used by similar (read: malevolent) characters in the Peking Opera.

The acting was superb and I agree with wavetwister. Besides that to me it didn't seem over the top really. Especially compared with terrible American cinema and tv lately. And I can't believe someone would say that they liked the manga but not the movie. The manga had some humor in it too so the movie really followed Junji Ito's vision I believe. And I think he worked with them a bit as well. Besides that it seems like Tim Burton-esque and he too uses that kind of thing. Dark humor and quirkiness. Very stylized. I thought all of them were really good. I don't exactly think it was because of the character archetypes as it was that they are from a different culture and so they annunciate and move and do different expressions than most Americans are used to. That doesn't mean it's bad acting. People who aren't used to foreign films shouldn't really talk about what they don't know. I loved Hatsune who played Kirie. And I liked most the school kids as well. I really liked Fhi Fan who played Shuichi. He is interesting. He was a model I believe.
Remakes suck.
