I can't believe how ignorant people are. Monkey Island and Pirates are both inspired by popular culture. All the things Pirates of the Caribbean and Monkey Island have in common can be found in older culture (poetry and movies). To quote a thread on a different message board:

So Monkey copied Pirates huh?? I love the original Pirates ride, but I don't remember ghost pirates, a captain with a beard who looks exactly like LeChuck, an island full of cannibals, a sword duel while you insult your opponent, a mysterious chest (which might as well have the secret of Big Whoop), a ride on a small boat to go see a Voodoo woman,...I could just go on and on and on. It's a rip off, I'm sorry...

I'm not saying Monkey Island copied Pirates of the Caribbean. They were just inspired from elements from the ride and other pirate movies, just like the PotC movies.

>>I don't remember ghost pirates

This is not original. I've seen ghost pirates in Popeye so I'm quite sure this is often used in popular culture and literature. The Pirates of the caribbean movies share a lot of elements from The Rhime of the Ancient Mariner (in which ghost pirates played dice games) which existed long before Monkey Island.

>>a captain with a beard who looks exactly like LeChuck

LeChuck is the typical evil pirate. He has a big beard beard just like... Barbarossa. I have no doubt Barbossa was based on Barbarossa who existed before Monkey Island.

>>an island full of cannibals

The cannibals in Monkey Island and Pirates of the Caribbean are nothing alike. In Monkey island they're not even real cannibals, they're vegetarians.

>>a sword duel while you insult your opponent

The sword duels in Monkey Island were inspired by movies in which there's a lot of pointless talking during the sword fights. Pirates of the Caribbean was meant to be a typical pirate movie, so they just had to include this element.

>>a mysterious chest

Because we've never seen chests in other pirate stories.

>>a ride on a small boat to go see a Voodoo woman

That was in the Pirates ride.

The Secret of Monkey Island is a great game which makes fun of typical pirate stories. PotC is a typical pirate movie. There's insult swordfighting in all pirate movies, there are ghost pirates in many stories and evil pirates have black beards. It's too obvious to talk about rip-off. And if you do think it's rip-off then both the creators of Monkey Island and Pirates of the Caribbean are to blame because little is original in both.

It's sad when people don't even realize how stupid they sound.

Yes, there are references to Pirates Of The Caribbean THE RIDE! The ride came long before Monkey Island was made.

How can you say the writers of POTC copied Monkey Island? Think about it fools.
