god that movie was so depresing. willem was such a sweethearted guy. does he have to die in every movie he is in? God, i almost cryed. It was so sad. The husband was a real drag, though. the second wife should had died. It would had made it more drimatic. If willem didnt die, it would be much more ENJOYABLE he seemes to put the fun in every movie. but he had to die so... I liked it anyway.
shareI saw this movie last night.(19.7.04) And beleive me I enjoyed every minute of Willem's acting as Father Andre. But it was so darn SAD. Why did the writer have to kill him off @ the end.
Did he have to make the ultimate sacrifice?
Anyway, this is the 1st sort of romance I've seen Willem play in & it was definately good. The love sequence was really well portrayed (it wasn't in your face ). Considering the character of Father Andre was NOT meant to have any kind of love relationship, it showed him to have very good control & it wasn't until near the end that he let himself go bit by bit. The love they portrayed for each other was in looks & stolen glances (bit like an old fashioned Indian movie )
(it also reminded me abit of The Thorn Birds in which Richard Chamberlain played the priest=sorry folks I got off the beaten track abit there)
+ plus you got to see a different culture / tradition which could be quite informative. It was tied in with the 2nd world war.
The son fell for the 2nd wife: no surprise there.
What a horrible man the husband was to force himself on his wifes like that-yuk.
Anyway, I found Willem playing the priest totally & utterly convincing

I just finished watching this movie which made me cried till now. At first i don't think I like willem to be the Priest in this movie, would be some other guys who looks more handsome, not this green monster in the Spider man, lol. but willem did a wonderful job which is really touching. I wish he would survive to give the Chinese woman what she loved and deserved.
shareI agree with all of you peeps, but I have to defend the second, more hidden love story in this movie...I personally, though the situation was extremely gross and hard to culturally accept, thought the love between Wu's son and Wu's second wife was sweet. This movie definitely defines the word, "unfair" since Willem dies in the end and Wu's sone can't have the one girl he absolutely desires...even though he gets her in the end.
