Monkey Island movie

I just registered here. I love the Monkey Island games(not all of them though). No, this topic is not an announcement of a Monkey Island movie in production. That is not happening. I just have some ideas for how I think someone should make one if anyone ever does. The first Monkey Island game was pretty good. The second one was the greatest computer game I've ever played(off the top of my head I can remember having finished 12 computer games, all of which were made by Lucasarts). The best thing I like about about "LeChuck's Revenge: Monkey Island"(the real title of Monkey Island 2 in its opening credits, at least. There was no "2" in the title of the game accept for in its closing credits) is its humor. The 3rd game, "The Curse of Monkey Island", was ok but not as good as either of the first 2. I guess my favourite part of 3rd one was the fake ending/fake death in one of the crypts on Blood Island. "Escape From Monkey Island" was pretty bad in my opinion. I find the 4th game insulting. It seems to make fun of handicaps and mostly ignores what happened in its predeccessors. Without spoiling the game for whoever hasn't played it there were 2 ways to end the first game and it ignores one of them. It also ignores the 3rd game in that according to that one, Big Whoop was on Monkey Island and when Guybrush is on Monkey Island in the 4th game Big Whoop is gone from the exact same place it was in the 3rd game. I think the games should have stopped with the second one. If they make another one I think it should ignore the 3rd and 4th games and maybe begin immediatly after the end of "LeChuck's Revenge: Monkey Island". I also think Ron Gilbert should be involved in its production, particularly in writing the script for it(I would LOVE to see him make another Monkey Island game or movie). He may be the only person to have worked on the first one who is still interested in making a sequel. It would be interesting to see a production like this begin as a movie/sequel instead of making a movie out of the first 2 games to begin with. I think some good choices for the cast and crew would be the following: Peter Jackson as director(if it were a movie I mean) or even Ron Gilbert himself. Elijah Wood(Wood said that the Monkey Island games were his favorite games in Entertainment Weekly so maybe he'd be interested) or Topher Grace as Guybrush Threepwood(If Guybrush ever finds a cure for the spell he seems to have had cast on him at the end of the second game). Gary Oldman is the first person to come into my mind for who would make a good LeChuck. I think Julianne Moore or Rachel Weiz would fit the part of Governor Elaine Marley. Tony Shaulhoub might work as Largo LaGrande, if he were to return. Perhaps the best choice I can think of for Herman Toothrot(He couldn't possibly be Grandfather Marley. For that to work, you would have to ignore the Captain's Log aboard the Sea Monkey ship Guybrush reads in the 1st game and the book "Big Whoop: Unclaimed Bonanza or Myth?" that Guybrush reads in the 2nd game. A comparison of those two books brings ample proof that Herman Toothrot is not H.T. Marley) would be John Cleese. If Carla the Swordmaster would be there I'd like to see Beyonce Knowles play her, but I don't see what the Sword Master would do if she returned. The only good small actor I can think of(again, off the top of my head) to play Wally the Cartographer if he returned would be Warwick Davis. I'd imagine there would need to be many special effects in a Monkey Island movie, and I think whoever did the special effects for Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy(I think that was WETA workshop) could make a Monkey Island movie work(not on their own, but with a good cast and crew too. I'd kind of like to hear Michael Land compose the music again.

Yeah. the 4th one is pretty sub-par.And the plot contradictions bug the heck out of me. I would have to say #1 is still my fave, followed by #3, because there are singing pirates and they make jokes about not being able to die in a lucas arts game. -Funny, Topher Grace happens to be on MY list for Guybrush too! I didn't think of Elijah Wood...but anyone who likes Monkey Island is my friend. interesting choices, all around.

Could you choke on a tictac? of course, but i wouldn't recommend it.

But how hard would it be to make a live-action MI movie without the voices of the MI3 actors-- I mean, Dominic Armato does Guybrush so perfectly. Maybe some of the characters could use a new voice, but really...

Deirdre: "You're not well."

reply

Hi First of all!
I like all the Monkey Island games, with a slight preference for the first 3.
The only possibility I see to keep the voices is to dub. I mean Guybrush is a bit ''wimpy'' (No offence). Dominic Armato doesn't look wimpy, but his voice kind of is (once again, no offence). So you take someone like Topher Grace (Not saying he's wimpy or anything) to act as Guybrush, then just as you dub a movie into a different language, Dominic Armato ''dubs'' Guybrush's voice.
A: I don't know if this any makes sense whatsoever.
B: It's probably a stupid idea, but possibly the only one.

I have played countless adventure games (their my favourite kind) and Monkey 1 & 2 are still in my opinion the best. I haven't played the sequels though I'm sure their not bad (call me old fashioned but I love the old 2D's). I would also love to see a Monkey movie but going by the way they make films today (AVP for example) you know they would just balls it up, so maybe it would be better if they just leave it alone and don't tarnish the name. If it were done by Speilberg and Lucas though, then maybe?

I thought of Monkey Island while watching the Pirates of the Caribbean and then noticed they mention it here in the films references - I knew it! (patting myself on back while simultaneously typing thispr rk[refesgf ep3r4, sh"t!)

Oh, if your like me you probably love Fate of Atlantis as well, there's a website called amberfisharts.com or something where programmers are making a sequel and its looking very good, though it will probably be a while until it is released (for free I might add!).

I've been reading a few threads about the Monkey Island movie, and Topher seems to be a good pick to play Guybrush. I have no preference over the 4 games. They all have their strengths. But the first one had a pretty nice story. I wouldn't like Monkey Island to be mixed up with the wrong director. It'd turn out like a wannabe popular movie like Troy, which could have been good. George Lucas should direct.

Another Monkey Island fan here! Must say the third game is my favorite (I know I'm odd), then again I've never finished the first one as it always gets stuck in the middle when I try to play it (damn DOS!)

Either way, I've always said there should be a Monkey Island movie! It'd just be brilliant! Mind you, I'm planning on becoming a director so if there won't be one by then....! ;) lol

But I must agree that Elijah would make a FANTASTIC Guybrush. I think Will Kemp could do good as well
Must agree about Gary Oldman being LeChuck.. that'd just be amazing :) (my favorite actor!) and if not him then prehaps Sean Bean.

but WHY is the rum gone?!

Lalyil, there is a program called ScummVM, it is for free, you download it and it makes all those old adventure DOS-games work fine, even with sound! But you must have a copy of the games ofcourse.

Wow, Topher Grace is a GREAT suggestion for Guybrush. Good work.

"You know what would make this party a little more fun? SWEET DEATH!"

The Third one was equally as good as the first 2, if not better. The Forth game was a bit bad in my opinion, although I still enjoy them all. But MK3 is my personal favourite, specially Murray. :)

reply

Hmm... I've said before, they're all amazing in their own ways. There's so many plot holes linking each story to the next that if you were going to script a series of films for each game, you would basically have to strip each game down and re-jiggle the plot about. For example the jump from LeChuck's Revenge to CofMI... ?!! didn't make any sense! (didn't have to, that's part of the fun of the series I understand, but for a director/script-writer I can tell a few stress levels would rise!)

EfromMI as well- Herman Toothrot was NOT her Grandfather he just couldn't be, and if he was, why doesn't the previous plots say that?

Like I said, when playing the games none of this matters what so ever.

My fave game is a tie between Secret of Monkey Island and Curse of Monkey Island. MI:1 being the introduction to this bizarre and hilarious story. Playing it was like playing a film in a very weird way. Yet MI:3 was the first time MI became modern! Modern imagery, and voices! Dominic Armato IS Guybrush! Never now could anyone other than he be associated with him.

Monkey 3 sucks. The cartoonish-ness sucked. The voices sucked. The cool thing about Guybrush in 1 was that he was a kid, and was not really full of himself.

In 2, he was this swaggering guy (cool beard, confident walk) who was still a total goofball at heart. Boy in a man's body, if you will. Kinda looked a bit like W. Axl Rose but honestly I could see Harry Connick Jr playing him.

In 3 he was just a gangly wuss with oversized caricatured features. This was because Lucasarts had success with Day of the Tentacle.

Topher would be good, but let's see how he pulls off Sandman/Venom first. Heck even someone like Jerry O'Connell would be good, or that guy who's married to Sarah Michelle Gellar, or the dude who played Johnny Storm in Fantastic Four.

I can't believe that i've NEVER found this forum before! I've played and beaten MI3 about 10 times and i NEVER found it boring! :) I don't know if it will say, but my favourite character is the one and only Murray the skull! (: If they were to make a monkey island movie, i would WISH that it would be this one! (Especially with all the "special kills" that you can NEVER die from no matter HOW many times! And the useless items like the LeChuck doll!) That would be AWSOME!

Hell yes!! I loved the dialogue in the games, though people would argue someone was trying to redo Pirates of the Carribean in another fashion.

It needs to be unqiue in its own way, and to be honest, I would love to see the quotes of these games reused in the film and have it work into the plot somewhat

Don't think anyone's going to make a movie of this any time somewhat, since it's sunk (no pun intended) back into the forgotten side of the idea world lol

Murray is amazing.

Murray: "And i will stride through the gates of hell and..."

Guybrush: (interrupting) "Stride?"

Murray: (long pause) ".....And i will roll..."

Brilliant.

Jim Carrey as Stan.. hell yeah! perfect! :-D I like the idea of an animation movie.. would be better than no movie at all..!

reply

After the Pirates of the Caribbean films, there's NO chance of a Monkey Island film, as they would be far too similar. Monkey Island took lots from the Pirates of the Caribbean ride, then the Pirates of the Caribbean movie took a fair amount from the Monkey Island games!

reply

Hi y'all!
Yeah, they are too similar! Pirates of the carribean even had ''Walt'' the dog and the ''voodoo lady'' in it! Obviously that was taken from the ride (which [the ride] was very good, BTW). Don't want to be insulting or anything, but Elijah Wood just looks ... constipated and Orlando Bloom looks more like Guybrush. How about Johnny Depp as a..? A, er a cannibal? Or the guy who sells the map on the street corner? kind of down-grading him here, oh well. Wish there was a movie though, directed by Ron Guilbert (Sp?). Sadly that is very very VERY unlikely. There was a theater play though go http://www.worldofmi.com/ for more info. That is probably the closest we'll get to there being a movie.
The 4th game wasn't THAT bad, but is certainly wasn't good. The graphics were just eww and the story did not correspond to the other Monkey Islands, also the controles were not the best. The only good thing about it are the voices.
That is all I have to say. Toodles.

That wasnt a theatre play, it was some kids school project, he did it on a stage, and it was awful.

Honestly, it's only similar to Pirates of The carribean in that it involves Pirates...and piratey themes... and undead captains...honestly there are a lot of similarities. I think it would be a great idea to turn it into a movie from a financial standpoint purely because it could get some of Pirates of The Carribean's market.
