Nobody will read this so I'll be outrageous

Since there's not been a lot of traffic on this board, I can be totally politically incorrect and not worry about incurring scathing rebuttals and/or character assasination. Good. Yesterday on IFC I saw this movie again, and so now I'm sure about the following: Regina Case, the lead actress who played Darlene, has got to be the most unattractive -- no, the ugliest -- sex-symbol ever depicted in cinema. I say again: EVER! Throughout this movie I kept thinking, "For chrissakes, pull back that camera because THAT is not a face worthy of so many closeups!" I know, I know: shallow, superficial, petty, even bitchy. Oh well! But really, come on now! How could this woman even get noticed, let alone attract four, no FIVE different men enough to have sex with them, and often enough to produce three (3!) children!? My God, are there NO standards in Brazil? Will the men there sleep with anything in a skirt? Anything with a pulse? What is UP with this casting decision! And while I say beauty is not everything, there has got to be something appealing to offer a prospective lover. I mean this woman was fat, old, and unkempt, so I don't get it. I suppose I should be pleased to have a non-Hollywood version of the heroine who saves the planet AND gets her man (men), but I just can't get to there as yet. I'll need time to recover from this visual assault on my aesthetics before I can applaud the movie's cinematic merit and social daring.

Okay -- I feel bad about my outburst. Sorry, I take it all back. Maybe Regina Case is not really that bad looking. In any case, I'm sure we are meant to appreciate that she has inner beauty, which is what matters most. I feel better now for having said so.

Regina Casé, Sex Symbol ? ahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah !!!!

I believe that you take too seriously this movie. This is a comedy, just like your post !

And yes, there are standards in Brazil. Beauty got to be something, and there are several princess in here. But the TALENT of Regina Casé, on this movie, is more than a single beauty face.

Got it ?

You dont have to be beautiful to be a sexy. Perhaps it was her confidence and sheer gall that was meant to be sexy? I think she was just a regular woman, there is alot worse out there. Plus the fact who are those old codgers gonna pull, especially the broke cousin. As they were both about to croak they could hardly start being picky; they were lucky they got to make babies so late in life.

My, I guess you all are Americans. And I have to say, that obviously you all are missing what Life is all about. So go ahead having your wifes have silicone beef-ups and labial nip-tucks. This movie is not about your beauty, it is about love.

There are many sexy women (even in Hollywood) who are not beautiful in your plastic way of looking at women. How about Barbara Stanwick? The thing about this movie is that the entire cast is not Hollywood's pick. That is what makes it refreshing and interesting. No make-up artists brushing away before each scene. This was a story about real people, living in a unique situation, and about love.

While not a beauty in the traditional Western sense, she has a way about her that is charmingly seductive. I don't think they held her out to be the best looking woman in Brazil, but a woman to whom men are attracted nonetheless. That's true sex appeal. It's not based solely on physical attributes. In fact, some of the sexiest women on Earth are far from attractive but really know how to carry themeselves in a certain way.

I guess I'm stupid cause I thought it was Mexico the entire time. But thats besides the point...

Anyway, a woman doesn't have to be Salma Hayek to get d!#*. How many real women do you know who are unattractive and have kids?...don't worry I'll wait. A LOT pinhead!

Second of all, this wasn't a Hollywood blockbuster, it was an independent film numb nutz (yes, I put a "z" there). I thought that it was a good film, great script, just a good movie in general. I'm pretty sure that the cast got pennies for their work, does that make you happy?

reply

I assumed that she was meant to be some kind of embodiment of Brazilian femininity. Note that she seems to be of partly indigenous ethincity, while her two kids were African and European looking. Don't know if there's anything to that. I don't think she's that ugly anyway; just a bit of a butterface. Her toothy grin reminded me of Frances McDormand.

To the OP:

Whatever--this wasn't a Hollywood movie with supermodels in the lead----people in foreign films look way more real that most people in Hollywood films, anyway. The film has a nice soundtrack by Gilberto Gil, regardless.
