Why is the DVD transfer terrible?

Is it just my copy? the night scenes look pretty aweful. and some other scenes look bad as well. I bought it at a used DVD store. it plays fine it's just the picture quality is sketchy in some scenes.

I think its all copies. My VHS copy is pretty bad as well.

Yeah I think it's because of how
it was filmed on video. :)
