What was the thought process behind messing around with the theme tune?

So, I understand that a lot of people didn't like the Theme song to Enterprise. Some hated it because it was different to what the other shows had, some hated it because they find the lyrics and everything about it overly sentimental and hokey. Personally I didn't mind it and after binge watching through season's 1 and 2 over the past few weeks, it has grown on me and I think it suits the show. But I still understand that its not for everyone.

However, I just got to Season 3 and noticed they tried to "update" the song, buy speeding it up slightly and adding a different faster guitar track to it. I think it sounds terrible. But I'm also really confused as to what the thinking behind this change was.

If they were bending to pressure from some of the Trek fans at the time that hated it, then why not change it to an instrumental or orchestral version of the tune Its not as if adding a guitar to a song some people hate is suddenly going to make them like it. And on the flip side of that, you end up annoying the fans that did like the song, by messing around with it.

You can't polish a turd but you can sprinkle it with glitter.

lol i guess that is pretty much what they tried to do here. Honestly, I think they should have left it, or changed it to an instrumental version, like the version that plays during the credits

Or realised the totality of the error that is the Enterprise theme song after the first season, nay the first episode, and scrapped it entirely and sent an orchestra back into the studio.

IT'S BEEN A LONG TIME!, I love the theme music.

I am one that enjoyed the theme. I thought it fit well with the visuals and I also thought the revamp made it unbearable.

I, too, like the theme song and the original orchestration, but maybe we're in the minority. I've never understood why so many people hate it to the extreme. One poster even said he hates it so much he almost did not watch the first episode.

The lyrics actually tell a story.

I loved the theme. Whereas the later Treks take place after Earth had many decades of warp travel under it's belt, the NX-01 was Earth's first ship. It was Earth's very first step and a big leap for humanity, and the theme song pretty much takes us from the first ocean going vessels to the first tenuous light-years of space travel.

The big bombastic orchestral arrangements fit the later movies and shows, but this was the opening series and deserved it's own unique song.

I thought it worked perfectly.

As for the tempo speedup, that was more likely a way of shortening the intro in order to squeeze more commercial time in.

I loved it too and looked forward to the song each time. In fact my wife, who is not a sci fi fan at all, would eventually start singing with whenever she heard the tune and ended up watching the show in the end.

I actually miss this show. I am now trying to get through DS9 but it’s a bit of a slog. It also has a beautiful intro tune though.

reply

I am in that minority because I love the theme song for Enterprise.

I liked the song. But the change of the tune in the 3rd and 4th season really was a suck-ass move.

reply

They possibly tried to shorten the length of the intro to be able to fit more ads in.

My main objection to the theme song was that it was such an earworm.
