Happily this is an European movie, instead of a Hollywood production
This movie proves it's quality because of a very artistic aproach instead of a feel good Hollywood production.

shareYou are right. Americans are not capable to do something like this because they don't have history. You need to be sensitive.
shareCarolinanaranjo:
America has no indigenous European history despite having European roots, but if you open a book or attend a lecture you might be surprised to learn that there IS actually a history. You might have some difficulty understanding anything that isn't located in Europe but maybe this will help you get over your mono-culturalism. Sometimes it's nice to learn new things.

I love you too but I'm going to mace you in the face!
Good point
shareIt's not a matter of cultural sensitivity, but of market. A film like this would never have found in America the kind of funding it did in France. Therefore the movie would have had to be altered, either in content to fit what producers imagine to be the American market, or in form to fit to a very reduced budget.

It is a truism that there is no market for a big-budget production such as this in the US. But why does a large enough market for this kind of film not exist? We are back in the lack-of-history/culture explanation.
shareMovies that are artistic and labeled as such need to get past the 'entertainment'-value barrier. Once they do, there is a market - even a big one - for them, too. Films like Amélie or La vita é bella are living proof for this.
Le roi danse however requires a lot of background-knowledge to 'get' it all. That's hard to overcome with a huge international audience (that is also not French and not even European, of course).
To say though that American film industry is unable to come up with movies like this - as the OP does - is simply ignorant and condescending. I'll check Fried Green Tomatoes, for instance.
Although i find Gérard Corbiau a tad cheesy at times , i still enjoy his movies a lot. I think most would agree that he would have made "Marie Antoinette" a lot better than Sophia Copolla. I look forward to watching Corbiau's next film on the big screen. Thank you for introducing me to amazing composers such as Lully and Farinelli.
shareLe roi danse however requires a lot of background-knowledge to 'get' it all.I think I know what you are alluding to in terms of understanding the court, its powers and hierachy and how the king's composer Lully fits within it. But ... I think the film has sufficient integrity that a viewer could appreciate the gist of this without detailed knowledge, which must be the strength of any film if it is well done.
