aw sad thing is that after viewing the first part i have to wait one week to watch the 2nd part.. argh..

reply

ni2r0kitt, you wouldn't happen to be in Australia would you? (SBS split the film and showed the two parts in consecutive weeks).

I had seen this film before but this time around I managed to record it. A masterpiece!

reply

GOD! yes! and you know.. i missed the 2nd part to it because i had celebrate my friend's birthday! arghhh.... u recorded it? do you by any chance live in sydney? sigh yea.. such a shame SBS had to split the movie... plss tell me u live in sydney, hopefully somewhere near the CBD area........

reply

That's a real shame. No, I'm afraid I'm in Melbourne.

You're best bet would be to get it on DVD somewhere (I'm looking to try and get it in this format as well). It might be a little tough though because it wasn't distributed here, so an internet purchase looks like the way to do it (Ebay has a few copies).

I agree that they should have shown the whole thing, but somehow I don't think they would be able to screen it in it's entirety because of it's run time.

You should really make the effort of getting it though. The second half is just as good as the first and the ending is excellent. It's now my favourite film of all time (I'm making you feel even worse aren't I?) .

reply

lol yea i guess since u mentioned the ending, i had been contemplating for a few moments whether or not to read more reviews of the film to extract more 'hints' (cant think of a better word) to fill up the void of missing the 2nd part.

yeah too bad blockbuster doesnt have it.. guess ebay's the only way to go.. it'll be awhile before i get my hands on it. shame.

though i will say that i've been doing some catching up on jap films, one other is Tenku no shiro Rapyuta, in Disney terms, Laputa Castle in the Sky. see, im from malaysia now studying in sydney, and sadly i'm deprived of many 'non-mainstream' movies, all we get is pure hollywood.

Laputa moved me in ways i never thought it could, just like Eureka, from what was a plain experiment while studying and i just had to know what's on tv on a Saturday night. Eureka, even though i just watched the first half, was really thought provoking, and i like the way it makes some parts of the movie inaudible or completely silent, which gives ample space for thoughts to flow in. Gee. I am drowning in my inability to watch it for now.

i wont draw comparisons between Eureka and Laputa, but mainly from my biased perspective, feels far more compelling than most hollywood films which aimed at lifting your spirits. you ought to really watch Laputa, Castle in the Sky if u havent already.

reply

I haven't seen Laputa, but I have seen Porco Rosso and Nausicaa. I'll get round to seeing more of Miyazaki's films one day.

Yeah, I also love the minimalist style often found in Japanese movies, and thankfully SBS manages to show some gems. I now seem to judge people on whether they like these sort of slow movies or not. I'm sick of most of the stuff that comes out of Hollywood.

Back to the Eureka ending, there *is* a bit of a twist in the second half, but it shouldn't spoil the experience because the really vital scene comes at the end, IMO.

reply

that is coool! i've been wanting to watch miyazaki films for a long time.. laputa is really nice.. would love to watch Porco Rosso and Nausicaa too... and perhaps all his other films..

SBS does show some gems. some of the european movies they show are way underrated, the fact that upon checking imdb and learn that so few have ever watch such good films and being fed hollywood bogus crap, intent on sucking our life savings.

i will have to get my hands on Eureka asap!

This film is available on ebay and elsewhere from a couple of HK and Korean sellers for between 6-10 US dollars.
Worth double checking with the sellers to see if the English subs actually work on the R3 and R0 versions before buying.

reply

amazon.co.uk has it.
it's region 2 though, so i can only play it on my computer.
one of my favourite films for sure, so it was worth ordering it.

reply

Yes I got the Region 2 version off Amazon.co.uk as well

I definitely recommend it! It is my favourite film of all time.

reply

Unforgettable.

reply

I'm not so sure, but I think Universal Pictures will release this movie sometime this year... my friend has a Videostore in Brazil and this movie just got there w/ English subs... hope it helped!

reply

I'll want to buy a copy, but it's far too expensive to buy a Japanese DVD from YesAsia.

I agree. Best movie ever until the edning (which is unfulfilling). Still one of my top 5.

I'm glad someone pointed this out. For me, the final 10 minutes (if not the final ONE minute) of a film is what makes or breaks it. I was moving along nicely with this film until it hit me with that very unsatisfying ending. As a result, I can't say I liked this film.

MINOR SPOILERS AHEAD
It had plenty of opportunities to end on a more powerful and unique note, but instead it chooses the most banal of cliches... they reach the top of a mountain, the girl finally decides to talk (somewhat abruptly and unconvincingly), the man says "let's go home", switch to colour, and the end. To me, the effect was as if I had just listened to someone setting up a 3.5 hour joke and then muddles the punchline.

Very much so: 9.5/10 on my score card.

Ah, the short attention span syndrome... I have the DVD and left an hour for the next day as it was getting very late, and I must say that, all day, I was very much looking forward to seeing the rest.

An enigmatic and unique movie this, that will soon warrant a second viewing

The best japanese film of 2000s. Aoi Haru is awesome too but this one is absolutely better. Koji Yakusho is awesome.
