First i was...

..."I'm sorry" "I'm sorry" "I'm sorry" "I'm sorry" "I'm sorry" "I'm sorry" "I'm sorry" "I'm sorry" "I'm sorry" "I'm sorry" "I'm sorry" "I'm sorry" "I'm sorry" "I'm sorry" "I'm sorry" "I'm sorry" "I'm sorry" "I'm sorry" "I'm sorry" "I'm sorry" "I'm sorry" "I'm sorry" "I'm sorry" "I'm sorry" "I'm sorry"

Seriously, the coughing was really getting on my nerves. As for the film, it isn't as good or poignant as i was expecting it to be.
Some great camera work, and wonderful acting. Some scenes work (specially the husband and wife scene), but overall it's not a good script, nor it is an interesting character study.
The murders subplot was really dull/dumb/pointless. I think the director didn't know how to structure the story, and sometimes i, as the viewer, felt engaged and wanting more, and others, i just put on my bs detector hat and thought "nah, this plot device is tricking me to believe there's something more substantial ahead of me, but it will fall flat". As it did. Pitty.

I thought it was possibly the greatest film I'd ever seen in my entire life, if not my favorite (El Topo, Taxi Driver, Possession, Hana-Bi, Satantango, and many others remain personally a bit better though I'm not sure if they're quite as masterful as this one). I've never been so enthralled by a 4 hour film, let alone the 5 times I watched it in the course of a year. So beautiful, and so REAL. The coughing represented the humanity of the character, a fragile existence; I thought the murder subplot was neat, there is certainly more to it being there than just some throwaway strand of plot, though I'm trying to figure out what it represented, "metaphorically" speaking.

I want to see it again. Maybe I'll enjoy it more the second time. If you want a similar paced movie which is more masterfully done than this one, try Maboroshi no hikari.

I LOVE Maboroshi.
