Movies like Wet Hot

What are some movies like Wet Hot American Summer....i love how everything is very random and im interested in finding more movies like it

reply

IMO, Dazed and Confused. its the only one i can think of

WE GOT JACKALS IN THE COURTYARD

reply

really? is the humor the same? or is it because it's both teenager-themed? because if its the same type of humor, i'll definitely check it out

reply

well, i think it is the teenage thing. and because they all do stuff together, or whatever.

WE GOT JACKALS IN THE COURTYARD

reply

WHAT??? Dazed and confused is nothing like Wet hot.
Dazed and confused is a straight forward movie.

Wet hot american summer is intentionally bad and over the top, which makes it great. The comedy of Stella (two of whom feature in this film) is supposed to be awkward, gross and stupid. My favorite joke is when Cooper says "i want you inside me..." which makes absolutely no sense coming from a guy (when said to a girl)

It is tough however to list other movies closer to the style of wet hot, "Reno 911" is pretty close, "shaun of the dead", "The Benchwarmers" even!

reply

i would have to say that wet hot is a parody of meatballs

reply

hmm okay, i heard reno 911 movie was disappointing (when compared to the show) but i'd check it out. and i've seen shaun of the dead, i liked it, but i think its a straightlaced parody, and not so much an absurd parody like wet hot seems to be (sure, its a parody of camp films, but it was made nearly twenty years after said fact, i'd even categorize it to be almost a parody of parodies)

reply

There are not many movies as funny in the same way that Wet Hot is funny.

"The Baxter" is made by the same guys and is a little less off the wall but still funny. Also check out episodes of "Stella" or "the State" if you can find em. same guys...

reply

oh well, it's good to be unique!

and i've already watched all the stella episodes and shorts, i just can't get enough. but i will check out the State, i've known about it and watched some over the years but i havent really ever buckled down and watched all of their episodes/sketches

reply

funny I thought of Dazed and Confused too but couldn't really think of why to back it up.. maybe just cause of the ensemble star-studded cast?

I think "Totally Awesome" is just like Wet Hot American Summer, though not quite as good. Still funny though. It was a made for VH1 movie but it has Chris Kattan, Dominique Swain, Tracy Morgan, James Hong, one of the stoners from Super Troopers, and that funny kid from Wonder Showzen.

reply

The Ten, which is also directed by David Wain and has most of the cast of Wet Hot and The State. It comes out on dvd January 15th.

reply

Okay, I finally got a chance to see this film and, wow, was I pleased. I wasn't expecting it either, since the reviews weren't too favorable. But it looks like it's just another case of reviewers being too dumb for the humor. That may seem harsh, but check out the critic reaction to Wet Hot American Summer, at the very least, Ebert is a moron.

reply

I would recomend Hudson Hawk, it was acctually made in the eightys and it has that same kind of absurd humor as Wet Hot athough the plot is totally different. And it stars Bruce willis, allways a plus.

reply

ive seen it so long ago i dont quite recall, but it's about time i watch it again anyway!

reply

Strangers. With. Candy. both show & movie, equally randomly hysterical and godly in every imaginable way.

Jerri: *beep*
Noblet: WHAT DID YOU JUST SAY!?!?
Jerri: I dont know.. what did you hear?
Noblet: I'm not sure--
Jerri: well then i guess we'll never know.

reply

I would have to say Hot Rod and the Brothers soloman are the closest to wet hot american summer that I can think of. Also the 10, already mentioned.

reply

the ten is OK, but not as good. same kinda comedy. i love arrested development myself. i watched brothers solomon, that was funny in parts. i like oddball dry black humor, everything else seems the same to me. unless itmakes me laugh out loud, i dont really care 4 it!

reply

For some random comedy, try Top Secret! or the more recent series Flight of the Conchords...

Oh, that's alright, I know a little german...he's right over there.

reply

I'd try Kung Pow, the humor in it is completly absurd, just like wet hot

reply

Kung Pow is great, but i don't know if i'll ever enjoy it as much as i did at one point. I'll have to watch it again some time.

reply

I second Hot Rod. I was watching Wet Hot again for the first time in a long time, and I kept thinking (especially during the "training" montage) that it reminds me so much of it! I recommend it to Wet Hot fans!

reply

ooh yeah im watching the third season of Strangers With Candy now, but i heard the movie was disappointing.

reply

OK, so noone has said anything about Wainy Days.

www.mydamnchannel.com click on Wainy Days. It's David Wain's web show. It's the same random humor and it is hilarious. He also advertises Wet hot and The Ten after some episodes. www.clarkandmichael.com is another excellent web show with the same kind of humor.

Your Welcome!

reply

oh yeah and i watch wainy days, and the michael showalter showalter. both are great, but theyre just not long enough

reply

You'd probably enjoy Broken Lizard's stuff, particularly Club Dread and Beerfest. Both don't feel quite as absurd as WHS, but both also make great parodies and homages to slasher and sports movies, and there are some crazy moments, particularly Beerfest when...

Gil appears as Landfill's twin brother in the ridiculous example of deus ex machina

reply

the mighty boosh is random, absurd and hilarious

reply

I recently saw, and very much enjoyed, Eagle vs. Shark.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0494222/

If you have seen any of the Flight of the Conchords,
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0863046/

Jemaine is the Eagle in this movie. I find the subtle, dry humor or both movies invigorating, but Eagle vs. Shark is still unique from Wet Hot American Summer.

reply

I would say in terms of random absurdist humor, this movie would be a little close to Monty Python, though not quite as full of over-the-top non sequitors and completely random conversations. The one comedy movie that I think I can really compare this to is Caddyshack. It isn't quite as surreal, but the dialogue is similar - very absurd, but delivered very dryly.

"I am a false prophet, and God is a superstition"

reply

They're not movies, but you should definitely check out three things: Home Movies, Dr. Katz, and Asssscat.

Home Movies and Dr. Katz are both animated TV shows that feature the voice of Jon Benjamin (who voices the can of vegetables and is in one of Stella's shorts). It's not quite as sporatic as WHAS, but sounds fiercely ad-libbed, so it pulls off a similar effect. Plus Home Movies features a lot of Queen parodies, which is a plus.

Asssscat is a live show that is comprised of the comedy troupe The Upright Citizen's Brigade (Amy Poehler, who plays Susie, is in this troupe). I've only caught their performance on television once, but it was really funny. It's all improv comedy, and this episode had the regular troupe, plus they had guests, who were Horatio Sanz and Tina Fey. Very funny.

Wow, that was a real Matt Pinfield moment, there...

That's right. I called 'em REO. The Speedwagon part was for losers.

reply

Check out the movie Rolling Kansas.

reply

the best thing you can do to help sate your WHAS fix isn't likely going to be a movie as there aren't really any movies that are like it (although i agree kung-pao comes close as does *possibly* brain candy). your best option is to just get "the state" "kids in the hall" and "the vacant lot" sketch shows on dvd if you can.

Seriously. That movie's great. Kevin's just about the funniest character since Walter Sobchek!

"Hey, anybody need a comb? Hey look, this looks like a human nose... Achoo."

That's right. I called 'em REO. The Speedwagon part was for losers.

reply

Try Happy Campers. Not quite the same kind of humor, but almost in the same realm.

reply

Ever see Bully (2001)?

reply

The anarchic, improv feel to this movie reminds me of Caddyshack (1980)
