How can you actually dislike this film

This is the epitome of a cult classic, a film that is not for everyone. Don't get me wrong, I fully realize how a person could HATE this film. But to me, it is the type of film that you either hold with you forever as an example of brilliance, or something you turn off after 10 minutes and never think of again.

I'm truly mystified by anyone who watches the full thing and then tries to explain (on IMDb or elsewhere) why the movie fails, or what they did not like about it.

To be clear, I don't think I am better or smarter than anyone for liking this movie, nor do I think anyone who is sharing their negative opinion of the film wasting their time, I just can't see why anyone would bother criticizing it. It is what it is, a cult hit unlike any other that launched the career of several stars, plus David Wain's directing career.

Oh well. My dad and girlfriend hate it. Me and my brother love it. I'm happy to be in the latter

More like morons are easily amused.

I think what inspires many to share their dislike of the film is how disappointing it is. The cast is unbelievable; few films have so many hilarious actors and actresses packed into a single cast, but the movie is just ... meh. Most of the jokes fall flat, and the satire is mostly obvious and dumb, as is the forced zaniness and moments of surrealism. There are a couple of very funny scenes, but overall it ends up like most of David Wain's stuff -- an uneven waste of an extremely talented cast.

You hit the nail on the head--this IS a great cast, and it's the main reason I decided to check this film out. And it's pretty obvious that the talent in front of the camera is doing their damnedest to make this material work and be funny...unfortunately the material itself is written and directed by morons possessing no talent. What a missed opportunity. 3/10.

Its just not that funny.

I get what you are saying...I actually watched the whole thing even though I thought it was not funny at ALL but now looking back I'm wondering if I'm too young (I think) and all the satirical stuff is going right over my head. Maybe you have to be of a certain age to appreciate the film...but honestly I hate that.

I'll tell you all about it.

Truly bizarre humor but most of it works

The answer to your question is because the film is trash. It is not funny in any way.

Boom.

I think it helps a lot, if you went to summer camp every year as a kid. There are some hilarious jokes I think you only get in this case, like the very beginning, when everyone is running back to their own place, or when they have a chance of going into town.

Also it helps, when you get all the references, of which there are endless.

Lastly, you have to be in a certain mood to want to watch this film. Therefor I think it's best, if watched all alone. Because we have to admit it: It's partly bad acting and some terrible story-writing in some scenes. But who cares - we know that going in to this film, so it's expected!
