My 10p.

Despite the situation they were in they were still soldiers and had enough self-discipline to stand with him as the most senior officer left. They may also have agreed with him even if they didn't feel they could do anything about it - after all they witnessed the murder of their colonel and were victims of the atrocities too.

I think that - despite their disagreeing with Major Campbell's plans - the other prisoners somehow understood what he was doing and why. After all, they were all soldiers, and all of them must have had revenge on their minds at some point.

Furthermore it was stated that Major Campbell was a "true leader". I think that in spite of everything he was a superior officer and thus respected as such. No one really dared to go against him until the very end when Ernie stops him from torturing Ito.

Even allowing for his state of mind as a prisoner, he was rather impulsive and did and said many things that a more thoughtful person - certainly an officer - should not have done. Not a man who thought things through taking into account the situation he was in.
