What A Great & Underrated Movie !

I watched this movie late last night and I enjoyed every minute of it. I usually don't laugh when I watch movies alone, but this one cracked me open. "Speaking of Sex" is written and directed well, and the acting is flawless (especially from Lara Flynn Boyle, James Spader and Melora Walters). My only regret is that Megan Mullally did not have a bigger part (I love her in "Will & Grace").

What's wrong with you guys (5.7 average)? How come you don't like this movie?

With such a wonderful cast, I can't believe this isn't out on VHS or DVD. Where did you see this movie. I'm dying to see it!

reply

It has been shown on the Oxygen channel and the dvd can be bought cheaply on Ebay.

reply

Yeah, where's the DVD? There's no Amazon link on the main page here, nor is there any release date listed.

What a cast! It must suck if it's so obscure. I hadn't heard of it until I checked Bill Murray's page here. I mean, c'mon! Catherine O'Hara is in this! Why has it disappeared?

reply

I completely agree! I was channel surfing last night and landed on the Oxygen Channel, something I never watch. This movie sucked me right in and I stayed with it to the end. Why hadn't I heard of it before? Someone please tell me how this cute and entertaining movie got lost in the shuffle!

What a great cast--and I loved Melora Walters in the ditz role! ALL the actors were great, including James Spader, LF Boyle, Megan Mullally, Hart Bochner (hello!), and everyone. A true, true delight. I loved it!

I may add that the greats Bill Murray AND Catherine O'Hara add comic class to every line they utter. WHY in heck was this movie lost?? I have zero recollection of it even being released or reviewed.

I agree. It is really funny and does seem to be underrated. I agree it would have been nice for Megan Mullaly to have had more to do in it.

I saw it on Sky (in the UK).

Amazon.co.uk seem to think it came out in 1999, so am not sure if they are even thinking of the same film! Ta for the suggestion re ebay.

PS Amazon.com has the Region 1 DVD and I think the American-tape version.

I do not entirely agree. There are some funny moments but overall it’s rather immature, I wonder what kind of audience the director had in mind considering the way he approaches the subject. Furthermore it's so dull to show passages at double speed, like Laurel & Hardy, that looks so cheap. And you can hardly deny the director lacks subtlety at times, no, but I had some laughs mainly when they speak smug-faced about mr and mrs Happy so I’m rather ambiguous about it, really. I gave it a 6 in a generous mood.

reply

I agree it is not very subtle.

Maybe part of the attraction for us in the UK is that it takes our prejudices that Americans are obsessed with guns, television, cars, sex, therapy and litigation and gleefully reinforces them.

Plus, it is one of the few comedies that makes any reference to contraception. It mentions Melinda's diaphragm and also the fact that she practised coitus interruptus with Klink when she was not wearing it. (I find it hilarious that he apparently did not even notice that she was "finishing him off" with her hand.)

reply

I just saw it yesterday and I must say, it was pretty funny :)

reply

It's on hulu right now. I agree it's an entertaining film with a great cast.

reply

Third time I see it and I still think it is very funny. Maybe our sense of humor it's a bit twisted because most people rated it not that high here (in imdb.com).

I waited a long while for this to come out in Region 2 - got it a few months ago from Amazon (Region 4).

I wasn't expecting too much since most reviewers of James Spader's career don't consider it worth a mention but I really enjoyed it. It made me laugh and I thought all the actors were equally good.

great movie! clearly underrated!!

I discovered this film a couple of years ago whilst on holiday - it was a rainy weekend and I hired this in the hopes of curing my boredom. Not only did it have me rolling, but I immediately watched it for a second time and had my entire family in stitches too! Brilliant!

Go take a step outside - see what’s shaking in the real world.

I agree for the most part but it was a little slow in the beginnning and not at all funny. I was put off by J. Spader being so bumbling, stumbling and inept as Dr. Klink. I went to sleep on it and when I watched the rest the next day it was hilarious. I agree they didn't need the kooky sped up run to their cars part near the end, but the movie was good enough for me to keep watching. Also Bill Murray was hilarious, especially when he kept manhandling Dr. Klink. The scenes where they're doing the depositions were really funny was well.

This movie made me laugh out loud! Very underrated, indeed.

I love how great James Spader is at physical comedy. The way he falls all over himself and seems to have every bit of clothing and his glasses askew - contrast that to the character he played on 'Boston Legal'!

Very funny movie!
