One of the comments mentioned this movie is based on a book. Does anybody know the title or the author of that book?

Which is great, but it's not available in English. I wish someone would just explain the basic plot to me, because I've seen the movie but I don't know what the brother and sister are talking about. If anyone has seen this and understands German, I'd appreciate some info.
