Worth Watching?

I just caught the last 15-20 mins. of this movie on one of the Encore channels. The cinematography and music were great, and David Wenham always does a good job...it really looked like an interesting European kind of Western(I don't know enough about Turkish/Macedonian history to call it anything else). Is it worth viewing the whole way through? Thanks in advance...

Of course it is. If you found those 15 minutes interesting, why not try to watch the whole?

You never know with movies, parts are sometimes the best part of the whole...thank you. I would love to see the whole thing, but haven't seen it at the local video-stores(and I don't use NetFlix)and haven't caught it on the Encore again...

Well, I can tell you what my own tiny experience with this movie was.

I watched it for the first time about a month ago, quite by chance. I saw it announced on a cable channel, and the combination Fiennes-Wenham caught my attention.

At first I honestly didn’t like what I was seeing, and some scenes made me think the movie was so bad that it was a joke. Even the acting seemed over the top and almost caricaturesque…

About half an hour into the movie though, I was completely absorbed. And by the time it ended, I was in awe.

The following morning I was still thinking about it, so I checked when they were showing it again. And so it was that last night I watched it for a second time, titles-to-credits, without as much as blinking, LOL!

And if the first time I had finally found the movie compelling and powerful, and even optimistic, this second time (once you know where everything is heading, and can therefore read a lot more into each detail) I thought it was absolutely brilliant.

It is not your “usual” type of movie. There is metaphor and symbolism and magic realism and humour and crudeness and overlapping timelines, all organized in multiple layers and multiple dimensions. So I’d be careful as to whom I recommend it to.

But I thought it was one of the best things I have watched lately (and that is coming from a person that really doesn’t enjoy violence on or off screen).
Manchevski does wonders with the images, the colours, the atmospheres, the acting, the storylines… I can’t wait to see more of his work.

So IMHO, yes, absolutely worth watching!

Thank you very much Blondie:) I found a store here locally(San Diego)that stocks a variety of films, and will order whatever they do not have. The imagery in that movie in the 15 mins. I viewed is what pulled me in also, so I can't wait to view the entire movie. Thanks again, I really appreciate your views and the recommendations...have a great night:)

And I hope you won't be disappointed!
:-)

The last part was really the most powerful and vibrant for me. So you might have caught things at their peak. But once you see the whole movie, there will be a lot more meaning there than you saw at first.

I specially found Wenham's last half hour or so mind-blowing. I think he speaks some 20 lines in the whole movie. The rest he conveys by looks, faces, gestures, body carriage. Really amazing!

Hi Blondie...I couldn't agree more about Wenham. I have been very impressed with his work(I couldn't believe that was the same guy from "LOR's" and "Van Helsing":) He has amazing range and is vastly underrated...I just saw him a few days ago in "The Proposition" with Guy Pearce and he surprised me again. I think a lot of us Americans are unaware of how talented he is, but I'm sure he will get his due eventually(look what what happened to "Mr. Under the Radar" Christian Bale of late:) It is a pleasure talking with you and thanks again for the info:)

I just PM'd you a comment, because I did not want to turn this into a Wenham-LOTR thread, LOL!
But in short, I agree with you.

As to the rest of the cast, I think they were all really impressive.
And I take it it must not be easy for them either, to keep up with the pace of a movie like this one.

Agreed:)
