Mingle it with common house dirt

After Ed Crane composes his blackmail note to Big Dave Brewster, we cut to him giving a boy a haircut. After reflecting on the hair for a moment he declares that he is going to throw the hair out with the dirt. "Mingle it with common house dirt."
Michael Baddaluco's character Frank asks Ed what the hell he's talking about and I would like to know also!

I enjoy the movie but I have no idea what he's going on about in this scene.
Any theories?

Maybe he wanted to see if it grew like grass. That's the impression I got.

Hair is the symbol of soul, so that's the point when he finally buries his soul and mixes it with dust. Thats the start of his fall, even though he was already in a bad shape, but he hadn't started acting yet until the blackmail letter.
