Sorry, I was just reading the comments and saw what you said. I realize a lot of people aren't old as dirt like me and probably weren't adults back in the 50s so they have no way of knowing what things were like. We went through a sexual revolution in the 60s where we really lost our innocence in matters of sexuality. 50s society was quite reserved.
This is a common complaint I've had with several directors and writers over the years. I know that it's because they simply don't realize how much the 60s influenced our attitudes toward sex. BJ's happened, but like the OP said, it was mostly something you'd expect from a prostitute or in a big city, not from a typical teenage girl. In that respect, you can see why his character was so shocked by her action. I mean... heavens to betsy! ;)
