We are off....First off Welcome back all and happy new year...on to the show....
Well this is certainly a much more slicker and better produced tv show than any we have done so far, most certainly a product of the show being done in 2001. I was a little uncertain about this show but after the first episode it looks as if it might not be to bad. The characters have been somewhat developed already from the x-files though it has been so long since i watched that I don't remember much.
The opening sequence was pretty funny but I found it hard to believe they would be back home the next day after being caught red handed and the chip being gone that was a little hard to believe. It looks as though Eve spends all her time firing sub machine guns...How much is that chicks ammo bill?
The hole world trade center thing was very creepy. A mere 7 months before the real thing....I wonder if the FBI got in touch with anyone associated with the show.
All in all this epp held my attention very well I found myself interested until the end I give it a 7 on the TLG scale.
Good to be back!!

Just finished watching this. (Finally got the DVD from Netflix today.)

It's hard to judge this episode without being overshadowed by the WTC aspect of it, because that's just a creepy coincidence. I wonder what the writers and producers thought on 9/11 - pretty weirded out, I bet.

As charmed says, the characters are pretty well fleshed out thanks to being on "The X-Files" - but they seemed to do an OK job encapsulating the Gunmen's story for those who weren't "X-Files" fans.

Yes, I found it hard to believe that the Gunmen would be released after essentially breaking and entering into the computer chip company. Even if they did not have the chip, it would still be a crime.

I'm no hacker expert by any means, but some of the computer stuff when they're breaking into the DOD seemed way wrong - like the writers knew the terminology but not how to really use it. Also, you would think that real hackers would not be able to be traced by "cookies" or IP addresses.

Yves Harlow seems more like a Lara Croft/hacker geek dream than a real person, but I believe we find out more about her in upcoming episodes.

Then there's the plane plot. It was almost quaint to see Byers and his dad wandering around the cabin with their suspicious-looking devices, bursting into the cockpit, etc. That kind of stuff would get you shot on sight today. And I would think that there would be lots of questions upon landing, rather than Byers and dad strolling off the plane.

I did enjoy some of the comedy moments, such as Frohike slipping on the carpet and in the mud. They never seemed too intrusive.

Watch/listen to the episode with the "extras" commentary track on, the director etc. address the issues like the hacking sequences you mentioned. They said they did their best to make a normally VERY boring hacking sequence exciting and captivating. IMHO they succeeded in making it interesting at the conscious expense of technical reality.

I didn't listen to the commentary ... but I said pretty much the same thing - that showing "normal" hacking probably would be too boring for TV.

Freaky coïncidence,
I always suspected that WTC was conspired by some insiders of the US Government,
and wrote large texts about it back in 2001 and 2002,...
I just saw the pilot, and I know now where they got inspired !
Still all those people believing that a caveman like Osama Bin Laden
was capable of organizing such a terror act on US soil,
I always found that it was nonsense !

I just can't believe that I am human anymore,
I think I am an alien because I always saw all those things so clear,
but nothing that my humble person can do about it.

Well, let's go to the second episode,...

I have now seen 11 of 13 episodes,
and they are very nice,...
I wonder if 9/11 is not the main reason that the show was cancelled !
Imagine how, behind the screens, the creators must
have flipped that their idea in the pilot was used in reality,...
flipped, frustrated, spooked,... enough to loose all courage
to continue investing energy in the show.

This is a message for you alone, charmedwon666,
because I am sure you are the only one reading everything here.
The way those boards here are made,
it is not easy to catch up anything.
I hope this discussion is going on on other places too.

Wow I like this show and I though only Art Bell new the truth. The LG are right behind him this show was doomed by the Government after this episode. They exposed their hidden plans. This show reminded me of the novel “State of Fear” if our nation doesn’t have an enemy we will make one up. You have to admit it was a little creepy predicting the future with 911 only a few months away. The show was very well done didn’t really buy into the chip part. If they did break in they would have been in jail for a while they wouldn’t of been released that quick. If they wanted to expose what was inside the chip why not wait and buy one. It would have been for sell soon. All that spying is already in the computers now. They simply use our ISP to collect the data. Going to give this one an eight on the LG Scale. Hope the next one is as good. Happy New Year to all.

Welcome to the board travelers and to the existing Lone Gunmen board members. Let the adventure begin.
The first episode was well done. It seemed like some of the flavor of the x-files but with some comic relief. The camera shots, lighting and atmosphere were very x-file like. I enjoyed the x-files but I don't think that I ever watched this series. I think that the writers wanted to take a different path and add some comedy while keeping the underlying story line intact.
Not having to develop the characters and the high level plot helped keep the show moving. It kept my attention throughout the episode. But they added to Byer's character with all of the info about his father and they introduce Yves which leaves some mystery into her character.
I think that you have to just look past some of the 'technology' issues just like you have to look past some of the time travel inconsistencies in other shows. I think they use terminology that most people can relate to, or at least identify, like 'cookies' and IP addresses even though most geeks know that it's BS. The computer stuff in Terminator for example.
The 9-11 scenario was creepy. The flight from Boston to the WTC! Wow! I don't remember hearing about this in 2001. Maybe the terrorists got the idea from this show. Definitely must have freaked the writers out.
Some of the conspiracy lines and Yves with the automatic weapon fire seemed to be over the top but I think that it was trying to be funny.
I'll give this one a 7 on the LG scale for good suspense and flow while leaving some room for moving in either direction.

Actually, the flight in this episode was from D.C. to Boston. But yeah, still a little creepy.

It seems so much like "The X-Files" because it was basically the same team behind the scenes. I did like the use of rock songs in a couple of scenes, though.

And away we go. The boys were interesting in the odd X-files episode, let’s see how they hold up on their own.

Conspiracy theory nut job scene to start things off, along with a rather unlikely Tom Cruise hanging from the ceiling in a Mission Impossible-esque theft attempt. I will state (without having to check) that this is the first time the term “Full body cavity search” has been used in a selected series, a harbinger of things to come maybe, along the lines of the immortal “Bat’s Breath” from our previous Voyage.

They were right on the money about the “Octium IV” chip too, just run a utility such as “Everest” and it’s counterparts on your computer and you’ll see that information gathering and storing have gone way beyond what the lone gunmen could have feared from the “Octium IV” chip.

The conspiracy involved is a bit of a stretch though, there would be plenty of ways to increase arms sales without having to cause domestic calamity. But there are conspiracy theorists who hold that the crazier and more unbelievable a plan is, the more it makes sense. It didn’t detract from the overall episode at all for me. The coincidence of this episode somewhat mirroring what would happen in real life is the kind of thing that gives conspiracy nuts…err… theorists fodder for their space cadet ideas. It’s easy to see how coincidences like these can be blown out of proportion and take on a life of their own. Add the “Boston flight cancelled” on the monitor as they exit the plane adds more to the equation.

Well done misdirection and excellent production values, along with a soundtrack that compliments the situations well. Excellent use lighting to set the atmosphere and mood, and great location shots make for a very well done pilot. Although it is ironic that ubber computer nerds would be using print media to disseminate their information. Nothing can be taken face value, there are nefarious hands at work in the back ground at every turn.

I went back and watched the episode again with the director and writer comments turned on, if you liked the episode as much as I did, it’s great to get the back ground information directly from the people that created the episode, especially after the bare bones DVD’s of the previous forays into TV land.

I give the pilot a 9 on the Gunmen Scale.

Yeah I was kinda thinking 9 for this episode as well but hate to rate that high on the first one. You bring up a good point about the location shoots most of the shows we have watched have been shot on studio lots. This one definitely shot on location.
