what do you think of them changing the names

Specifically, Bat-Manuel and Captain Liberty, which i assume are based off of Deflater Mouse and Maid in America.

I saw these changes as purely POLITICAL. When it comes to ridiculous silliness, changes like this are embarrassing.

I mean it's a show about a superhero called THE TICK, yet it seems like some filthy lawyers and (ugh) marketing execs intervened and had these two characters changed. On the one hand to CREATE a ethnic character and the other to soften a supposedly female character, something which I don't get since Maid in America is one of the only capable and intelligent characters in the original. Only they wanted to make her silly and inept like the rest, which of course ruins the contrast between the funny characters.

It was due to copyright reasons, because Disney aquired all of the non-comic book characters from the cartoon (that's why Arthur is still the same). I would've liked to have seen Sewer Urchin in the live action series as a main character also.

Save me a place in hell, the warm spot between Hitler and Walt Disney

I like the name Batmanuel better, but also prefer American Maid to Capt. Liberty.

Wow man, not only do you jump to incorrect conclusions, you also have some serious axe to grind. Take a deep breath and chill. The names were changed for copyright reasons, and even if they weren't, your nutty anger seams way misplaced. Find something else to focus on other than paranoid delusions of social engineering!

Deflater Mouse? Does he deflate stuff in the comics? I didn't read them. I thought it was Die Fledermaus, the German word for bat.

I mean what made Deflater Mouse a funny name was that it was a running gag of "what the hell is that". I think it had to do with the execs thinking that they didnt know what it was either, so they changed the name. Also, I think that they changed the name American Maid because I think they thought women would be offended by a maid superhero.

Maybe it's because I read the comics first and saw "Die Fledermaus" written out, and knew that it was German for "The Bat" (actually more literally, the flying mouse) but I NEVER thought it was a running gag of "what the hell is that." Maybe it was for YOU because you really didn't know what the hell it meant. The joke was, he couldn't use Batman...now do you get it? And I'm a woman, and I was never in the slightest offended by female superhero American Maid. That's ludicrous, there's nothing offensive about it. Women have been maids, that's a fact of life, and some women are still maids. So? Now if someone had said something stereotyped and prejudiced like "all women should be maids," or "the only thing women are good for are being maids," then I might take offense. But there's a difference between that and a superhero character based on something silly, like an "industrial clean-up artist."

You are correct that part of the joke is, he couldn't use Batman, and "Die Fledermaus" is German for "The Bat". But another part of the joke, is the fact that in English it sounds like "Deflater Mouse", in other words, a scared little mouse – and he is depicted in the cartoon as cowardly. It's a clever name, more than people in this thread are giving it credit for...

Batmanuel is a pretty good name too, but I always preferred the original names.

@ concrescentblahblahblah.....

I might take your opinion a little more seriously were it not for the fact that you clearly don't even know what the actual original characters were called.

Fail there on that post, buddy. (It's American Maid and Die Fledermaus, BTW)

I thought Batmanuel was brilliant change, though the Captain Liberty name sounded like they gave up. On of the strenghts of the Tick comics and cartoon was the creative names: Sewer Urchin, Bipolar Bear, Oedipus (comic book, parody of Elektra), Baby Boomerangutang, Sarcastro, etc... Unfortunately, the tv series didn't really get a chance to showcase the same creativity, aside from pre-existing characters from the comics.
