Younger than Springtime

I didn't actually see the whole thing of this horrid remake but from what I did see ... It was rather disturbing how "sexy lieutellant" Connick ends up in bed with Bloody Mary's daughter the first time they meet.

Bloody "Pimp" Mary doesn't bother to tell him it's her daughter till later. The daughter looks like a high school kid. Younger than Springtime indeed.

In the original movie, Liat and Lt. Cable did indeed have sex when they first met, yet it was implied. You couldn't do that in movies when the original came out! And I'm sure Liat was probably even younger than you say.

As for momma, it would have been typical for her to want her daughter to hitch up with an American serviceman.

yes I agree... to have that good of skin and teeth that they lovely actress had... she couldn't have been any older than 14 and most likely younger than that....because if she was around 14 she would have already been married for a few years at least... so Bloody Mary's threats of giving her to the rich man or whatever would imply that she had just reached a marrying age... 10?

The original play also suggests that Cable and Liat sleep together during their first meeting... if I remember it correctly, it has a part where he starts to lift up her shirt and then the hut goes black, and when the scene focuses back on them again later, his shirt is off.

But I still find it quite amusing that you used the phrase "Bloody 'Pimp' Mary." Kinda my thoughts about it too, though this is arguably my favorite musical of all time.

I didn't like this scene either. As soon as Mary is out of the room, Liat takes her shirt off, just like she was a young prostitute. When Mary later tells Lt Cable she is her daughter, Lt Cable is embarrassed and seems to want to apologize. I thought the girl looked like she was 17 or 18. Supposedly he falls madly in love with her at first sight.

In the 1958 movie it might have been gently implied that this is what happened, but I never thought about it. John Kerr (Lt Cable) already had his shirt off when he entered the hut, and has it off several times in the movie. Lait was always fully clothed, even when swimming. This Lt Cable even remarks "Your just a kid!" This girl looked to be about 16.

Realities of war time. And not just during WW II.

The actress was 23 in this movie.

It's pretty clear that he thought Bloody Mary was taking him to a prostitute, and the whole point was to have sex with her. Bloody Mary was saving her daughter for someone she thought would marry the girl. But the girl is obviously a young teen, which is very disturbing, even though it is typically for girls in non-industrial societies to get married as soon as they are of child-bearing age.
