Missing a song

I taped this when it was on originally and couldn't find my favorite song - "This Nearly Was Mine".
Glad they put it back into the concert version at Carnegie Hall (2006) which was much fun on TV !

reply

Yeah!
Brian Stokes Mitchell did such a WOUNDEROUS job with that song!!
He was the perfect Emile.

actually, the song is in the 2001 remake... i haven't seen the original movie or the stage production in years, so it may have been a reprise of "this nearly was mine" but i'm pretty sure i remember that song in this movie

reply

"This Nearly Was Mine" IS in this version. The song that's missing is "Happy Talk."

As others have mentioned, if you get a chance to see the Carnegie Hall concert version on PBS, Brian Stokes-Mitchell's rendition will bring you to tears! (And, for that matter, despite her age, Reba McIntire makes for the nearly perfect Nellie Forbush.)

Any South Pacific version that omits arguably the best song, Happy Talk, simply because its a TV movie and has to be a certain length, does not get my vote. In answer to the other comments about the miscast Glenn Close, look at the names of the Executive Producers for a probable cause.

The only plus about this version is that it reverts to the original show's orchestrations, as do most of these Disney remakes.

I haven't watched this for ages but I don't remember My Girl Back Home on this.

reply

My girl Back home was not in the original production. It was cut before it made it to Broadway and was restored for the first film version. That said, it was filmed for this version as well, but was cut and may now be seen in the bonus features section on the DVD. As mentioned before, the missing song is Happy Talk, all others from the original show are represented.
