what were they thinking?

been a while since i saw this but what in the world were they thinking?
i can understand doing thier own take and so probably refused to watch the original but couldn't they at least have picked up the book?

glenn close as nellie is absolute ****

didn't read the book, but if it was supposed to be a remake of the original movie, they should have left it alone. i know the color hews in the original were a bit annoying throughout the songs, but you could feel the heat and humidity of the south seas. whereas the new version could have been filmed on nantucket.

Like Barba Streisand, Close wanted a vanity film? That's the best explanation I can think of for this abomination.
What's with Close and those white areas around her eyes? Very distracting. I didn't see her character wearing sunglasses.

Can Glenn Close even sing? the voice sounded much younger than Close actually looks

reply

She actually is a singer. I have one of her Christmas albums by Hallmark.

True, but a better comparison would be Lucille Ball's "Mame" from 1974. Lucy was at least 15 years too old to play the role convincingly, and she truly had a horrible singing voice. On second thought, "Mame" had a strong supporting cast, including Robert Preston, John McGiver, and Bea Arthur and Jane Connell from the Broadway production, while South Pacific's cast had the mediocre singer-actor Harry Connick, Jr. as one of the male leads, and with the exception of Robert Pastorelli, all of the supporting cast consisted of unknown actors.

And while Lucy was 15 years too old, Glenn Close was, at 53, thirty years older than her character. The Navy probably has more 53-year-old admirals than ensigns.

I think the title of your thread pretty much covers it. Glenn Close financed this production so I guess you could call it her YENTL. Close is much too old for this role and that was apparent from jump and her singing voice sounded nothing like her speaking voice...the difference was jarring and if this is any indicatiopn of what SUNSET BOULEVARD is going to be like, I'll take a pass. The one thing I liked about this production was Harry Connick Jr. as Cable. His renditions of "Younger than Springtime" and "You've Got to be Carefully Taught" were on the money. Oh, I also thought the late Robert Pastorelli made a great Billis.

The camera did bring out every creak, crease, and wrinkle in Glenn Close's face and there were ALOT of closeups of her.

Glenn Close is waaaayyyyy too old for this role, the remake is unnecessary, and Harry Connick Jr. looks freaky and obsessive when he's singing 'Younger than Springtime'.

I have no idea what they were thinking.

Yup.
This was pretty much crap.
Which is dissapointing because I honestly love this musical.
My favorite proformances of Nellie, Emile, and Cable weren't in any movie....it was in concert at Carnegie Hall.
With Reba McEntire as Nellie...and though I know it sounds akward....she was incredible. She brought the perfect humor and cuteness to the part.
And ummm how about stage god Brain Stokes Mitchell as Emile?
All I have to say is holy **** that man is amazing....he fills Emile's shoes perfectly. And his "This Nearly Was Mine" brings you to tears.
Anyway, those of you who haven't seen it and love this musical...should give it a try...it's on DVD...

I agree 100%. I just saw the "one night only" Carnegie Hall concert presentation on "Great Performances" on my local PBS station tonight. This presentation truly lived up to the Great Performances label. Reba was great. Brian was great. And so was the rest of the cast. No sets or props? Who cares? I hardly noticed.

Forget the Glen Close disaster, forget the disappointing 1958 Mitzi Gaynor movie version. If you want "South Pacific" on DVD, get the Carnegie Hall version and be absolutely spellbound.

They should have done this right in the first place, back in 1958! Doris Day would have elevated this musical to something great. Her incredible singing voice would have made the songs sound better than anybody, plus, she was a dancer and a damned good actress. If Day had done it, there would be no need to do a remake.
