Right! Thank you! It's like they wanted Glen Close in that movie so they remade it. Problem is some of the songs just don't work with it that way. In the original Mitzi Gaynor was 25 when she filmed it while her leading man was in his 50's. It made sense. When he sings, "This is what I've longed for. Someone young and smilin', Climbin' up my hill!" or "Younger man than I,Officers and doctors. Probably pursue her" How silly that made them look. I adore Glenn Close, but I think it was a silly move she made. Not to mention, her features don't fit that time period at all, nor does her short mannish hairdo. She looked straight out of the early 90's. I was so angry. They just cut all the lines Cable has about Nellie loving a man in his middle age and how strange it is. It's just so silly. I'm so glad others think so too.
Every writer is a frustrated actor who recites his lines in the hidden auditorium of his skull.
Yup, definitely miscast and one of the weaker elements of a weak story line. And the makeup they put her in to smooth out her facial features made her look like she fell asleep in a tanning bed with her goggles on. I very much like Glenn Close but this was not an assignment she should have accepted.
Casting Glenn Close in the musical version of South Pacific was a wrong move, because in the musical, Nellie Forbush is young. However, in Michener's Tales of the South Pacific--the book the musical is based on--Nellie is much older. So if they were to do a movie of the book, then she may have been a better choice, but for this, no...
This movie was dismal... however I liked the idea of Nellie being an older woman who had finally found the right man for her... unfortunatly all the songs (his and hers) impy that he is say 50 and she is 18 to 20... it is also implied that Nellie is the prettiest of the nurses and one would guess that she would have already been snapped up by one of the officers or at least have some totally in love with her and therefore trying to come between her and Emile. However an older woman (40s?) would get overlooked by the men in favor of the 18 yr old nurses. And an inteligent man like Emile would probly be happier with an older and more intelligent woman (with a warm and younghearted personality) than a ditzy 18 yr old.

What are you talking about? In the book, Nellie was TWENTY THREE! Glenn was nearly old enough to be Nellie's grandmother in this remake.

Ok, for the record, Glenn Close was 45 when she made this film. This film was her idea. She is a great actress, but your right, she was too old to play Nellie.
I am watching this version of South Pacific and it should not have been made. It is the worst version of one of the most beautiful musicals. She was definitely too old to play Nellie and she shouldn't be wearing pants when she visits Emile on the plantation. Women would be wearing a blouse and skirt-not pants during the war! I have seen many productions of this musical and Nellie always wears a skirt except when she wears the sailor suit! I am changing the channel now, this is unbearable.
How kind of you to say, "abit." I'd say it went way too far. This is just depressing to watch. Ms. Close has much talent, but this role absolutely makes her look silly.
