Better than 1958

I'm a product of the '50's, but the 2001 version is really better than 1958, re: productiion and especially direction, if it had come first, I guara-damn-tee you! Of course they had almost 50 years to improve on the old version, but they did it, in my guar-anteed opinion!

reply

No it wasn't.

In most respects I agree with you but a 46 year old Glenn Close as a naive Arkansas girl isn't believable.

reply

Yeah, she was put in there for "star power", but I don't think it works.

It feels a little more natural, but I think the original version has a bit more pop and energy that this production lacks.

I think part of that is the fact that when the original play and film were made, the second World War was still fresh in everyone's mind. Now it's a distant historic event, and therefore there's a greater degree of detachment.

reply

I liked this version but in my opinion the 1958 film was better.
