Ceiling walking

When Morpheus and Trinity and I forget the other guys name go to the coat check room at the club and engage in a fight, the baddies start running on the ceiling to try and shoot Morpheus and company. But it's a straight up gun fight at first then turns to running around. I wondered " why stand on the ceiling and stand upside down to shoot at them" why not just stand straight up. I know it was to show off cool special effects, but it seemed like gratetitous ceiling running and annoyed me. I didn't see a tactical advantage until they tried to run around them. I've never been in a gunfight where the combatants ceiling run, so maybe there was an advantage. But firing upside down seems a lot harder than standing straight up.

You answered your question: after the trick, all of them are upside down relatively to each other, what makes gunfire harder/less effective, thus giving time advantage for the next move.
And one more thing: ceiling guys probably get used to the trick and feel no difference shooting both normally and upside down.
And the last: this was done for cool effects, of course :-)

Yes you are correct on all accounts I believe. Yes it was done for cool effects. When I watched it, i was wondering if they train that way lol. I can imagine someone saying. "If there is any trouble, we all run towards the ceiling and shoot from hanging upside down like a bat. This will confuse the intruders and we can jump to the next place we want to go. John, you get the left side of the ceiling, Frank, I think that's Frank bc you are all wearing masks like the gimp wore, you get the right side. I'll take the middle." Frank: why can't we just shoot them? Leader: BC we have to look cool man! You can't just shoot anyone in the Matrix! It's all about style. And you can't hit them with your first shots, you have to miss on purpose and have as much tile and wall shatter as you can. Kinda like in Die Harc when they shot the glass on purpose. The first clip is to break as much stuff as possible. Then you run and shoot making it extra cool. Only then can anyone actually shoot someone. I talked to Trinity and Morpheus and they will do the same thing. If you can hide behind a pillar, they will unload a clip on the pillar knowing the billets won't go through. But it will look wicked cool!"

:-)
why to wear sunglasses and cool leather outfits then? To scream to everyone that you are awake of the Matrix and easily spot yourself?
Everything in Matrix Universe is for coolness rather than effectiveness. And this is on of the reasons we love it so much.

Its just one more minor trick to disorient their enemy. Standing on the ceiling means that they are also seeing Morpheus and Trinity upside down, but they have trained for that and know that its coming.

Morpheus and Trinity don't expect that and will be slightly delayed in their actions. They are going to peer around corners and forget for a second that they are looking in the wrong direction. Stuff like that might just be enough to give the guys a tactical advantage.

Heres's a question I have asked ever since I saw it initially: Why do their coats go right-side-up and NOT hang down? Once the bad guys are flipping onto the ceiling in slow-mo the coats even go up with them! Everyone thought I was crazy when I asked that back then but why not?

These people have the abilities to effectively do things like that. In a word, it's the freaking Matrix.
