I don't understand why they would agree to stay in a dirty, dark bunker in the ground. You can't even get cellphone reception--what sort of teens can do without cellphones for even a day? Kiera's character would definitely not find such a rathole acceptable. And to allow someone to simply lock them in? That's just stupid.
So already I found this to be too incredible to accept, and the film just went downhill from there.
- Nobody locked them in, did you watch the movie? It was Thora Birch's character that locked them in and pretended the door was just stuck.
- This was made in 2000, teens in those days weren't attached to their phones, and their goal was to stay out of sight for fear of being caught so I doubt they cared for cell phone reception.
- Arent they teenagers? How are they going to book a hotel and find a ride to one without getting caught? Especially since one of them is the son of a musician being hunted by paparazzi...
The hole was an ideal spot for a few days of debauchery, giving them the freedom to drink, do drugs, and party. In high school I would've loved discovering something like that, so I doubt it was so far fetched.
I'm not sure who you're responding to, but I'll take up the point. I, for one, didn't say they were locked in. I know Thora Birch's character locked them in. I just didn't buy that they planned to stay in that hole for three days. I would have loved that discovery as well, but I wouldn't have stayed in there for three days. As for your other comments, by 16 with a little fast talking I was able to do things like check into hotels to party and rent cars, and I didn't have anything near these kids' resources. I'm sure they could arrange it.
shareWell it's the perfect place to have a party. They don't have to travel anywhere far, they don't have to pay for anything and they literally don't need to worry about anyone busting them. The school thinks they've gone home, while they've told their parents they're going on the field trip.
They go down there for three days to miss the trip
I was camping around that age so I would've rented a cabin if anything. That hole would've been so cold(fall in the UK) they wouldn't have stayed one night without some source of heat

In a hotel they could all just leave if they wanted to. I think her intention was to keep Mike trapped until he got closer with her. So a hotel was no option. I can't understand either how someone would spend their weekend in a dirty, dark bunker, but obviously there are some who would like it.

I'm pretty sure they were all too young to be able to rent a room, especially in the UK where there isn't such a thing as high school kids renting rooms for prom night and such.
Also, it seems plausible to me that teenagers would rather have an adventure in a creepy hole like that - when I was that age we hung around in cemeteries and stuff. When you want to get away from adult supervision you don't care what kind of dump you resort to. To them, at their age, without credit cards and underage, unable to just get a room, this would be fun. Plus the added frisson of believing they were locked in. Teens love that shit.
