they would never have got in the hole without a key

Who in their right mind would ever get into a hole like that without knowing there is a key with them or at least an exit in the case of an emergency?? The idea that the teens would put their fate and lives in the hands of a person like that is completely unrealistic.

I agree. If something happened to that person you're fuqked. As it turned out, though, that wasn't really the case, was it?

Everytime I watch this movie that's what I say... Why would they LET themselves be locked into The Hole? What if there was an emergency and they needed to leave? Then again, teenagers aren't known for thinking ahead and being rational! Haha, but yeah we know that's not really what went down. This was just Lizzie's made up cover story.

The hatch wasn't supposed to be locked. Liz locked it with the key that no one knew she had. Martin only helped them get to the hole without anyone catching on, while the gang was supposed to simply walk out whenever they wanted. So aside from the obvious risk of partying inside an abandoned hole, they never willingly gave up their ability to exit in case of an emergency.
