Okay, this is an accident of freak, but a good hindi movie for a change

I agree that this must be one of the countable few hindi movies, which are actually fun to watch. The three central characters are all adorable and relatable indian middle-class guys in financial trouble, all for different reasons. Thats actually the reason why they are relatable. Baburao representing the middle-aged slow marathi, shyam represents the morally righteous but upstanding young man(think kyle) and raju, the i-will-do-anything-for-money-so-kiss-my-ass corrupt but adorable prick(think cartman). All the lesser characters are also well thought out and beliveable. The movie is light inspite of all the heavy stuff happening because it never takes itself too seriously. It works for all its worth and now it is a TV favourite back here in india.

But I have a few problems with this movie (as with any other :) ). If indian movies want to be taken seriously, they are gonna have to drop the act and come clean. There was no need for a single song to sustain this movie. All that the songs did was to break the flow, kill the tension which could have been left in, and demean a perfectly honest attempt at making a good quality movie. Further, they try to buy too much sympathy for all the characters, which was not needed as nobody was gonna judge a comedy for being politically correct anyway. And not to mention, it became irritatingly unrealistic towards the end, with all the gun-fights and throwing around the little girl. And dont even get me started on the acting skills of akshay and sunil, they are both pathetic. I would say for the international audience that if you have to read subtitles, better watch the original south-indian flick RAMAJI RAO SpEAKING(if at all you can get it), as that one might not be plagued by the commercialism and watering down of bollywood, but then again, south india is also india afterall, so who knows...

come on Mate!!

this is a Hindi movie after all......the music numbers are one of the reasons that I choose these over Hollywood...........that's Bollywood!!

why try to change it when that is part of it's appeal to so many people.

I have some non-musical hindi movies - "Sehar", "Sarkar"and "Black" and they are brilliant movies but I've only watched them once whereas a movie like "Hera Pheri" I will watch again and again because I love that combination of comedy, music and melodrama.

Thank God we are all different after all. So we should all just enjoy the movies we like and let others enjoy what they prefer.

Merry Christmas from the land down under!!

VIVE LA DIFFERENCE!!!

The malayalam version is better than the hindi version but got to say paresh rawal was great.....

Its a comedy version of the English film "Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels". Or, at least, pieces are heavily borrowed from it, especially this films second half.

That Is All.
The End
Good-Bye.

I think you are talking about Phir Hera Pheri, not Hera Pheri. A completely different film in my opinion.

'Hera Pheri' does not ripoff 'Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels'.

Mate u r absolutely wrong. Lock stock is a 1998 movie....and its original Ramji Rao was made in 1989.

NOW wud u agree that the englishmen copied it from Kerala...lol.

reply

Agreed.

I don't know when Bollywood will grow out of having songs. This movie is the best comedy to come out of Bollywood yet, though.

I agree with the positive and negative aspects you point out of the film, especially on the commercial aspect due to which the film contains a lot of unncessary songs and slapstick sequences (like we needed those). I just disagree with you on the acting of Akshay Kumar and Sunil Shetty. I think they were both marvellous in how they made their characters come alive.

If I ever get the chance, I would love to watch the original film.
