What fool decided Toronto looks like Detroit?

I just watched the opening scene of this movie. Instantly recognizable downtown Toronto is there. Roy Thomson Hall. The Canadian Broadcasting Centre. You wouldn't use NYC to represent LA, so why this? Also, anyone who's been to the Detroit Indy Grand Prix can tell you that falling off the Belle Isle Bridge (actually the MacArthur Bridge) is hardly the dramatic fall shown in the movie. Probably less than 10 yards.

And you can see the *beep* CN Tower in the background MULTIPLE times!

I lived in Calgary, Alberta for a few years, it was cool to see the Lionsgate bridge used in the initial action scene.

This had been discussed multiple times. Obviously, Detroit is not a city that is film-shooting worthy, hence the filming location in Canada.

I know I'm late to the party, but I was watching this earlier and I noticed a Pizza Pizza logo on a building, which is a pizza chain in Canada. Same with on one of those screen signs, it said Skydome on it. That was a dead giveaway.

All I need is one mic...

Excuse me? Hollywood's been shooting films left and right in Detroit since our former govenor came up with a package for generous tax films credits for any production shooting here. Do your research, please. U.S. productions shoot in Canada mainly because it's cheaper due to said tax credits, plain and simple. The last couple of TRANSFORMERS films were shot here,as well as the box office hit movie OZ, and the new SUPERMAN VS BATMAN or whatever the hell it's called will be shooting here (it may have started already.) I know as soon as film tax credits kicked in, for about just over a year, you couldn't walk through downtown Detroit without stumbling into a film production---they must have been shooting at least, I kid you not, at least five production a week down there.

Of course that all slowed down when our recent governor got into office and cut down the credits to the point where production slowed damn near down to a trickle, despite the fact that it provided a hell of a lot of jobs throughout the metro Detroit area. Even now the film crew credits are in jeopardy, because of short-sighted (Republican,of course) state politicians not seeing the benefits of it (idiots.) Anyway, life goes on.

Oh ok - that sounds alright then.

How long ago have these taxes been in place for?

This is a common problem seen when when disguising one city as another. Romeo Must Die had similar problems setting the movie in Oakland when it was actually filmed in Vancouver. The biggest give away in that film were the scenes on the docks that had mountains clearly visible in the background. Anybody living in Oakland would instantly know that wasn't Oakland.

The producer who wanted to slash his budget and get tax credits!

Its that man again!!
