Why is it called "Bully"?

The title puts the focus on Bobby Kent and his sadistic behavior, the way he mistreated Marty and the others. But isn't the real interesting part of this story not the vile behavior of one bully, but of the way 7 teenagers plotted and carried out his murder? Too me, that's what really stands out as unique and disturbing.

reply

I think you answered your own question...who is the real bully here?

reply

I think the title is maybe just too generic...but 'bully' and 'abuser' are very in-words at the moment.
I think like some other true crime titles, could have just tried harder to figure something more original and specific to sum it up in a few words.

I feel you, about the generic and uninteresting titles of true crime. This was this great TV-movie from the 90s starring Clancy Brown, Sheryl Lee and Moira Kelly. It's about the disturbing real life case of David Brown (no relation) and how he manipulated his 14 year old daughter Cinnamon and ordered her to murder his wife (her stepmother). It's a really sad and compelling story about manipulations, domestic abuse, and how a father can twist his daughter's love and trust. This is summed up powerfully in the title of the book the miniseries is based on: "If You Really Loved Me".

But what do they call the movie? "Love, Lies and Murder". Unbelievable!

And it's a good movie, all the performances are great, Clancy Brown especially. But that title change...

reply

I do not remember seeing that telemovie, but a book title 'if you really loved me" rings strong bells with me..maybe even have that right here, and from memory is one of the major St Martin's/Pinnacle etc set of authors...maybe Ann Rule.

Some of them have apt names, ditto the '48 Hours" TV shows...others, they just don't think of the best one or the good ones have already been taken.
"Bully' is not much of a title for this case.

reply

Yeah, Ann Rule, exactly!

I rarely take the time to write anything on this site. Not because what I've seen didn't cause some type of reaction or made me think even more than I already do too much. My brain must have been wired half-assed as it has no "off" switch. Even when sleeping, I'm still thinking. Well enough crap about me not pertaining to the film I've just watched.

Firstly, I'm NOT surprised this was based on real events in Florida. A town name is mentioned early on I've actually played live music in. I'm a lifelong pro musician as to the why I was there.

I agree the title was poorly chosen. I know exactly what it's REALLY LIKE to be bullied incessantly by my peers from my Catholic grade school years from 1966 thru 1974. I was beaten regularly by more than one. Bullies NEVER act alone! They always have their minions who either help, or provoke a situation. I was verbally abused constantly. Even in my backyard, I'd get made fun of if one of the neighbor kids saw me in my backyard bothering no one...yet they'd yell things at me to torment me.

My parents were good, EXCEPT when I told them nearly every day that I was being treated as described and here is what my mother said each time. "It's probably your own fault." Then telling my father, what did the same man who told me often just how tough and bad ass he was a a kid and still was during his 40s during my 8 years in grade school do when I told him? NOT A DAMN THING!! Not a phone call, not a visit, not even going to the neighbors house and telling their kid to shut up and leave me alone. I GOT NO HELP FROM THE ONLY TWO PEOPLE I HAD TO COUNT ON IN THE WHOLE WORLD. I'm an only child, so I had no big brothers, or even big sister to stick up for me. I was on my own and had to learn very quickly how abusive and unrelenting these kids were. And yes...I grew up as did they...all middle class, white people. I've never been able to forget anything good or bad that happened over my entire life from age 5 to present day age of 55. I nearly killed a kid in the first month of HS because the bullying had started up again, and after losing several nights sleep and not able to even eat...one time as I was leaving the cafeteria, the crap started being said to me. This time I turned, dropped my books and dared the kid sitting with his bully friends to get up and try and kick my ass. Well, in the world of bullying, you're not allowed to back down from a challenge by the person being bullied, so he got up and when he got close to me...I grabbed him by his head (he was several inches shorter than me. I was always a tall beanpole) and began to bash it against the concrete block walls of the staircase we were standing in. It took three teachers to pull me off him and chunks of his scalp was stuck to the wall, he was unconscious, and had to have an ambulance show up. I was given immediate suspension for a week, then a weeks detention when I came back. I found out through my friends who saw everything, he had a fractured skull and the ER had to staple his scalp together because of the missing chunks after shaicng his head to do the procedure. Then he had a small bit of plastic surgery to replace the missing scalp, but his hair never grew back in those few spots. THAT WAS THE BEST THING THAT COULD HAVE EVER HAPPENED TO ME!! From then on, I was NEVER BULLIED again!

And this movie however real, would NOT have happened in my time of growing up. This is a product of the Internet becoming the only way kids communicate with each other. The media in all its forms have desensitized everyone to real violence and it's why kids are such a-holes in f-d up states like Florida. I'm convinced after moving from NJ to FL in 2001 that it has much to do with the fact people who live in places like FL, and NEVER have to deal with the realities of winter at all ages makes them too stupid from all the direct sunlight frying their brains, plus they have waaaay too much free time on theirs hands because they've never shoveled a sidewalk, driveway, or had to learn to be careful and cautious when on slick roads covered with sleet, snow, and ice. Yes...all this adds up and national statistics prove my own conclusions. I've looked them up because I'm NOT an idiot or talk/type without knowing of what I choose to discuss.

I think ALL of them should be euthanized because they just breed more like them as history has proven. And this world is already too full of scumbags and useless human flesh. And if ya won't kill them, at least sterilize them so they will stop breeding! I'd wipe out all the "Wiggers" like the kid who gets beat up by the "bully" all the time for trying to be gangsta instead something worthwhile. I'm glad, and any who have read this far might feel the same...but I'm glad I never had children in the world as it has been since the early 80s to present day. And it just keeps getting worse!

this is an interesting theory, it is not completely alien to me, as I have either thought of or heard of a similar kind of theory to explain climate as a major factor in respective human progress, or lack of it, across the globe..., why the temperate and frigid zones are responsible for virtually all of modern human progress in certain areas, the Torrid equatorial band, not so much, in fact, not responsible for *beep*-all except obstinate default adherence to toxic malevolent religions which have never done anything except cause poverty, strife and misery, breeding demented psychotic in-bred children in droves, as well as general incessant *beep* neediness.
the middle-east, and the N-ers in slightly different ways, being the obvious major parties with all of that.

BTW, as mentioned elsewhere i think on this board, I nevertheless love Fla and if I had more money than I have (I have some but probably not enough) I would emigrate and retire there....to finish baking my own brains in the sun and not shovel any *beep* snow at all.

He was killed because he was at least perceived as a bully, one who wouldn't quit until he was killed.

reply

Well to me that *beep* deserved to die. To me he was the disturbing thing about this movie.

reply

Cause and effect

Because of bobby's bullying

The effects were people plotting to kill.him

reply

Bobby Kent was a bully but every other single person in this film was extremely unlikable too and took no responsibility for any part of their lives. Much less who they choose to hang around with.
