At that point the football team has a huge fan following and is playing for State Champs or something. The whole school would still go if Gil didn't show up.

I don't get why she would say that.

Mostlikely yes, but what really confuses me is that everyone turns up because he does, when they would have had no idea he would show (except at the last one, where he led them)

Well he told the girl he's coming, and being the whore she is she probably wrote "GIL IS COMING" on her chest and walked around school before the game....
