the trap door

I wonder what ever happened to the trap door. It was there to allow for access into the chamber. After the philosopher's stone was taken from it and destroyed, there was no reason to protect the trapdoor. So what happened to the trapdoor? And if it was magicked closed, why not do the same thing during that first year? rather than having a deadly three-headed dog to guard it?
