I haven't read any of the books, so I'm curious and to what they do for a living to buy Dudley 37 birthday gifts?

Vernon is director of a company called Grunnings, which sells drills. Petunia is a housewife.

In the opening chapter of the Philosopher's Stone it says that Mr. Dursley was the director of a firm called Grunnings, which made drills.

In addition to the responses of the others, it could have also been a union job and that could explain why he was paid so well.

And it would make sense that he would be a director of a company that makes drills as he used them to put bars on Harry Potter's window in the second movie
