Pre-Fab Four??

The comment in the plot outline is erroneous in two ways. Firstly the Monkees were obviously *after* the Beatles so, if anything, they would be the 'Post'-Fab Four amd the wordplay fails and, secondly, the name 'Pre-Fab Four' had already been used and assigned to the Rutles in the films/mockumentaries. The phrase 'prefab' refers to the British practice of erecting cheap 'prefabricated' housing post-WWII, or as it is now known in the US as 'manufactured housing', and as the phrase is British should not be allocated to an American band.

But isn't that what they were called in the beginning? Maybe the terminology is confusing because they've been called that for so long.

Besides, it a VH1 movie...don't take it too seriously...it's supposed to be really off-base. Look at the Monkees Behind the Music versus the E! True Hollywood Story. In truth, VH1 just doesn't cut it.

VH1 just doesn't cut it --- What do you mean?

And...

I didnt know they had a E! True Hollywood Story, I'll have to keep an eye out of it but then again I may of watched it before and just dont remember, That could very well be lol

I believe the Pre-Fab is short for Prefabricated, as in they were put together like many of the boy bands of a few years ago.

As for The Rutles, I think you're right, but The Rutles are not really a band. They're a parody. But then again, The Monkees kind of were too. They both recorded music but The Monkees were "real-er"

I seem to remember that title of "Pre-Fab Four" being used at the time of the Monkees TV show. You can argue all you want about the erroneous nature of the name, but it's what they were called so you're stuck with it.

reply

Yes this is true...pre-fab because of the way the band was put together.

reply

Well, the Monkees were called "Pre-Fab" right from the start, and since they were a decade before the Rutles, that point is wrong.

I wasn't aware that "pre-fab" was a strictly British term, either.

(:

reply

The term "Pre-Fab" was clearly rooted in the american term which is often used to describe housing and building projects where the design was "pre-fabricated" and then intended to be assembled as it was sold.
That's where it came from, perhaps I'm from a different era but I knew exactly what they were talking about when the critics gave the Monkees that name. They were a "Pre-fabricated group" created by the network, unlike other bands which formed in garages etc. on their own and worked to be successful.

Well, since we Americans speak English, it's perfectly OK for us to use it too LOL

reply

1) Pre-fab is not a uniquely British term, and it does mean "put together" instead of "before".
2) The Monkees were called "the pre-fab four" long before The Rutles ever existed.

Prefab is not just a British term or practice. In 1947, Amercian architects Alfred and William Levitt started to build prefab towns in New York, Pennsylvania and New Jersey. They were all called Levittown. The idea spread like wildfire across the country and it was the birth of suburbs. In the 1960's it was one of the many things that the young were rebelling. The songs Pleasant Valley Sunday by the Monkees and Little Boxes by Malvina Reynolds are about that way of life.

Dude: It's Pre-Fab in the sense of a 'pre-fabricated' (or manufactured) home, which are also common in the US. Not in the sense of pre-Beatles. You need a new hobby.
