Yeah, it was quite unpredictable, I didn't get it when I first watched the movie only when I got back and thought about it I realized what was going on.

Could somebody explain the end to me? I got that the ghost came back as a new girl every 3 years, so does that mean the hanged girl's ghost was in the girl who walked down the corridor at the end? If it is, that's just too spooky! (And by the way, why did she hang herself?)

SPOILER!

yes, the hanged girl WAS the girl who walked down the corridor at the end. from what i figured, her ghost returned & could somehow "change" or "morph" into looking like someone else. but it was really her all along. *shiver* i get the creeps just thinking about it right now!

I, too, am curious why the she hung herself, was it because that other girl didn't meet her like she requested or something?

Having seen this movie many times, it's one of my favourites, I think I have an answer to that. Remember that So-young and Jung-sook used to be best friends, but drifted apart when the teachers started comparing them.
Jung-sook, to me, always seemed like the kind of girl who needed a friend but never had one. When we learn of her history with So-young, I truly believe that she wanted to patch things up with her. After getting slapped and being told that she was a loser and wouldn't be as good as So-young, I think she took it to heart and figured, "If I can't be friends with her anymore, why bother living?"
It's tough when close friends drift apart. I think Jung-sook was just extremely lonely; look at the way people treated her. They made up stories about her, and never tried to reach out to her. I guess she figured that, if So-young was never going to reach out to her, be her friend again, she figured her life wasn't worth living. So..she ended her life.
It was probably then, as she says, that So-young realises that maybe she should have reached out to Jung-sook. Nobody else did.

Sorry... i'm a little confused with all the names in this movie :)
Who did Jin-ju possess? Was it that girl who hung herself near the end or the girl (I don't remember her name) who was teaching the other girl to paint? Because I remember at the end when a girl walked down the corridor and turned around and the credits rolled and I was like "What The...?"

Jin-Ju didn't posess anyone. She just "Reincarnated" (not really, but you get the point) back every three years. As for the girl who was walking down the corridow in the very end of the movie, I believe that it was Jung-Sook's turn to cycle back every three years just like Jin-Ju did.

Exactly. That's what I thought the first time.
It's Jung-sook's 'turn' to be the 'ghost'. I like to believe that the spirit of Jin-ju was, not only looking for a friend, but someone to take her place so that she really could rest in peace.

reply

Oh...I get it now! Thanks everyone!
But why did Jung-sook hang herself in the first place?

reply

She was upset about her fight with So-young. The two used to be friends, but drifted apart; realising that she and So-young may never be friends again, and that Jung-sook may never 'beat' So-young(Korean schools are VERY competitive, even moreso than Japan), she killed herself.
She WAS the outcast of the school, right? If you've ever been the outcast at school, sometimes suicide seems very tempting. I know I was like that when I was in school-I got teased every day from the day I walked into kidergarten to the moment I walked out of grade 12.

reply

Jung-Sook's story mirrors that of Jin-ju: desperately needs a friend, finds one, becomes outcast, loses friend, dies tragically whilst feeling abandoned and betrayed. I guess that's why she takes Jin-ju's place at the end of the film.

It's such a sad ending because it seems to be that Jin-ju is finally "saved" or redeemed, only for another girl, Jung-Sook, to take her place. It's as if you can help one person but it's always going to happen someone else because the source of the problem is deeply rooted in society and basic human nature itself. It just seems such a bleak outlook to me.

I could be entirely wrong about everything I've posted as I've only just watched this film for the first time tonight, but that's my impression from the first viewing.

Very good film, this one!!!
