My big problem with this...


...as with much of the fiction/drama set in this period, is that I simply don't care for the parade of fundamentally spoilt, privileged, arrogant, pampered and self indulgent people whose lives bear no resemblance to those of the vast majority of the people that lived around them but whom we never get to see.

Generally speaking I do get that there is an element of universality to the situations and the emotions that people experience in the films, and it's not like I can't empathise with them, or recognise the story that is being told under the surface of the plot. But that doesn't alter the fact that in the end I just don't care for them, and so sadly, in this case for 2.5 hours, I sit there being rather bored or irritated by the spectacle, rather than enjoying any merit in the performances/production.

Shoot me down if you will, but I've made many attempts at this, and always approach things with an open mind. Just not going to sift from this I'm afraid, too much of an old Trot in me...

All that said, I don't think this is a great film, even without my inbuilt bias.
