This reminds me of Solaris...

...the Solaris directed by Tarkovsky. Of course, it was not exactly the same, but it left me with the same feeling. It seems like they both deal with one man's journey through loss and regret. I also notice that the same criticism that people had of that movie (i.e. too slow) is the same as what people have of this movie.

I thought that the ending of this movie was heart breaking, and I surprisingly liked this movie.

Did Tarkovsky do the original? That's the only one I've seen, felt no need to see the George Clooney remake.

I found Solaris to be a more complete film, while Til Human Voices Wake Us was very, very loosely strung together. I did find it interesting and touching, but was left saying, "WHAT?" by the end. Meanwhile, Solaris left me feeling moved -and- complete. I understood what the hell happened, for one.

Yes, he did the original. The George Clooney version is not so bad, though.

I agree with your idea of the ending, but the films captured the same emotions, I thought.

It reminded me greatly of "The 4th Tower of Inverness" before the 8th chapter. But the denoument was much more egregious of "The Absolute Perfection of Sanctified Forgetting".

To understand is the opposite of existing.

I saw bits of the Tarkovsky version after I'd seen the Clooney remake. Tarkovsky might have nailed some of the loftier high-brow and philosophical questions better, but the Clooney version was a visual feast. Still and quiet but with warmth in every shot. I call it my lullaby movie because it soothes me when I watch it. Seriously. It took me a while to warm up to the storyline, but I bought the dvd after my first watch just because I'd never been as visually entranced by a film as I was by it.

With regard to the movie being slow, I think it entirely depends on the edit you saw.

The original (Australian) version is told entirely in chronological order, with no flashbacks. This is the first one I saw and, while I didn't think is was too slow, a few others I know did.

For international release, they had to edit the film so the two lead actors (Carter and Pearce) were introduced earlier. This was the version where everything is in flashback and feels much faster version.

I prefer the original, slower version though. It's more like a meditation. Plus, when the first part (when Samuel was younger) is played in one solid block, it gives you more time to fall in love with Silvy.

Also, the International version drops a few great scenes. One of them is adult Samuel going out with a scythe and chopping away the tall grass so he can move the boat.

funny thing is that I just finished watching till human voices wake us on the movie channel when I started reading here in the forum, as I was reading your solaris related post I hear the announcer on the movie channel saying: "coming up next on the movie channel "solaris" (the clooney version) so it was pretty interesting as a coincidence, thought I'd share that :)

Yeah, I was pretty suprised to find this post too. I have seen the Clooney version of Solaris a couple of times but always wanted to see the original. I just so happen to get the original Solaris and Till Human voices Wake Us and watched them back to back! I guess i was just in that mood and they both sounded like they had similar themes i guess.

reply

Wow! You're so right. They are very similar. Good call.
