The jewelry scene went over board because Dean had stolen Bast's girlfriend. This hardly implies Dean had a sexual relationship with Bast. So, they substitute a black guy for Bast and imply Dean had a problem with blacks. This is an insult to Dean given his close relationships including Eartha Kitt, Moses Gunn (his understudy on The Immoralist), Sammy Davis Jr. et al.
