How do you rate this movie fairly?

The problem I find, especially with movies like this, is how do you give them a 1 - 10 value? This movie is a perfect example of the problem. As a movie released in 2002, compared against movies of it's time, it's brilliant, entertaining, and well done. However, compared to all movies of all time, it's mediocre. Compared to movies like the 1939 version or to Zulu, it's not even worth mentioning.
So I'm torn with movies like this. Taken on it's own, and with current generation movie audiences in mind, it's a good, solid, entertaining film. But for hard core, old school movie fans, it's going to either be average, or worse.

...please!! you got to rate it compared to movies of all time otherwise there will be no quality left in future productions!!!
you owe it to yourself as hard core, old school movie fan!!
besides 'the four feathers' was disappointing!!

Sure, it may not be all that great compared to the book or the '39 version, but you do have to take into account the poor quality of the movies made now-a-days. Some movies made recently are terrible, like 40 Days and 40 Nights. It's awful! Compared to that, the 4 feathers is amazing! you have to take into account both sides.

one can only compare it to what one knows. to compare it to today, or yesterday, or before, is to struggle for the assumed 'middle ground', this imaginary place that involves a collective group of people who have all agreed on a set amount of films that each likes equally. it will never happen. art/life/sex/everything is subjective. that's the beauty. spill your guts. it's either good or not. then quantify it if you have to.

one should never discuss their opinion in the context of 'the age'. what good is the opinion if it's not genuine?

Well, based upon the "appropriateness",the language, the over all story, (and of course the fact that Heath Ledger is in it :)LOL) just kidding! I would give it a 8.
