Jessica VS Larissa

Which is the better Excel?
My vote is for Jessica. I just don't think Larissa can nail Excel's voice the way that Jessica did.

On the other hand, I think Larissa does a SUPER job as Chako in "Cosplay Complex." Mostly because Chako doesn't yell as much. and Larissa got kind of grating after a while when she was screaming.

Anyway, begin discussion!

I wouldn't know...I only watch the series in Japanese with subtitles.

Ditto.

Jessica, her voice is a little less sugary. It feels like Excel Saga is in two parts because of the voice change. But i love the series and puni puni is brilliant too.I had the pleasure of meeting Monica Rial. She's a lot like Excel. Luckily shes not like Hyatt, i'd be covered in blood otherwise

I preferred Jessica. Excel's obnoxious positivity was better displayed by her, I think.

I preferred Jessica, even though Larissa was easier to understand. I just wish they had picked one or the other...it ticks me off when a character/actor changes half way through something, even though sometimes, I know its unavoidable sometimes...

reply

I can't really tell the difference between them; they both sound horrible.

reply

Jessica. Once I hear a voice, I identify it with the character, and the change annoyed me and made it a little less enjoyable.

" The original North American voice actress for Excel, Jessica Calvello, damaged her vocal chords while doing the dubbing for Excel Saga Region 1 DVD #4, necessitating her replacement by Larissa Wolcott starting with episode 14.
"

Thats hilarious (although I feel sorry for Jess). I guess that explains everything...

Life is pain, Highness. Anyone who says differently is selling something.

Definately Jessica. Larissa was, in my opinion, too hyper and high-pitched (surprisingly, considering its Excel XD). But Jessica nailed her perfectly!

Actually I think it fits the theme of Excel Saga making fun of animes. A lot of anime's in the US change voices a lot when dubbed. So it doesn't bother me.

To quote Ned Flanders (in a suspiciously deep voice): "And they can change the voice actors and no one can tell the ding doodly difference!"

Jessica. Larissa was okay, but Jessica really felt like she put her heart into it. If they reissued the last the DVDs with her redubbing them, I'd buy 'em.

the dubbing is not bad at all i'd actually liked some of it, but i thought she was even yelling when she didnt need to i guess, that's what caused Jessica's premature end to her involvement, but it suited the excel most of the time. and i admit some of the dialogue is better in the dub, like in the bowling girls episode, instead of the 'bowling king' saying "my ball" he actually had a stupid name for his throw to knock down that tv guy. nabeshin was great fun in both versions..

I personally find Larissa to be MUCH easier on the ears and less annoying than Jessica, but Jessica nailed the role, so I refuse to pick favorites. I like them equally.

Jessica. I'd love to be able to do an Excel voice like her. It was annoying, in a good way, just like Excel. Larissa's voice was annoying...in the bad way.

I'm sure if she had been Excel from day one it would have been fine, but you can't out do Jessica after she's already played the apart. It would be like getting John Heder(Napoleon Dynamite) to replace Leonardo DiCaprio on Titanic at the last moment.

Personally, I liked both, but Larissa took some getting used to, because I was more used to Jessica.

I think its hilarious though, that the downfall of Jessica was caused by Excel's over-hyperness. =)

Jessica was pretty cute - I also loved her as Mink in Dragon-Half. Larissa seemed a little raspier as Excel, but I liked her.

Both were pretty good in their own way.

Jessica was pretty fantastic as Excel and I loved her. Larissa was considerably good as Excel, good enough for the rest of the series to be enjoyable and for me to not really be bothered by the change. In fact, I think the change actually helped keep Excel fresh. Jessica's absolutely inspired manic whackiness, though brilliant, might have become too grating near the 20 episode mark. The voice change might have been just the trick to keep Excel's random absurdities interesting enough throughout the span of the full series (quite an amazing task, but I think they pulled it off for the most part).

Great series, and it has one of the best dubs ever. ALL HAIL LORD ILPALAZZO!!!!

Wow, a purist on an anime message board - how surprising =P lol I kid, I'm a purist when it comes to Naruto, but, thankfully, Excel's dub isn't anywhere near as horrible as Naruto's - Excel Saga is, in my honest opinion, one of the best English dubs of an anime, right up there with Cowboy Bebop and Rurouni Kenshin.

I, however, really can't pick a favorite between Jessica or Larissa. I felt both of them captured Excel perfectly, though I did feel that Jessica may not have been able to pull off the one serious episode of the series, and I really felt that Larissa was the perfect choice for the last half of the series. Both were absolutely perfect for the part they played in the series - and honestly, if my boyfriend hadn't told me they had switched VAs for Excel, I might not have noticed. The transition, to me, was insanely seamless.
