One of the worst comedies I've ever seen.

I love movies, and I especially love comedy. I love a good smart comedy like The Birdcage as much as I love Dumb and Dumber. My favorite movie is Ferris Bueller's Day Off. But this movie...

The first time I saw it, my friend invited me over to watch it. I had to sit there and pretend to laugh. It was like... painful. I felt I had to laugh at it because my friend thought it was so funny. I couldn't just walk out and say "This sucks, man."

So my opinion of this movie may just stem from a painful first experience. Maybe it's funny when you watch it with like six of your buddies.

But I can't believe the dude's making a sequel... guess he has a good fan base. ::Shrug::

reply

no offense, but this movie doesnt really fall into the Ferris Bueller-category of comedies, so its like comparing golden delicious to granny smiths

i guess it just aint for people like you

now i always considered myself to be an arthouse fan, but this movie had its laugh-out-loud moments, and stupid as it may be, my subjective opinion is that it has its own appeal

reply

I am usually up for any kind of comedy, but I really thought Kung Pow stunk. The only thing remotely funny to me was the cow for about 3 seconds. Really weak beer.

reply

The same people that hate the movie always find just that one scene with the cow funny, which I thought was stupid even when I was 12. So I can't really appreciate your sense of humor after that.

This is Mike. He saves ghettos.

reply

Yeah, I find this movie hilarious, but the cow scene went on too long for me. It is interesting to me how people's senses of humors vary but fall into what are emerging as predictable camps. I.e., if you think the cow scene is the the funniest thing in the movie, you think the rest of the movie sucks. If you think the movie is a stitch from beginning to end, you find the cow scene mildly amusing at best.

reply

Yeah, dude, that's really curious. I mean, I really love Kung Pow, but the cow scene isn't exactly my cup of tea. Why the hell do people that doesn't like this film find that particular scene funny? It's weird.

"You go that way. I'll go home."

reply

Beats me. I'm one that thinks the movie's just "meh" but thinks the cow scene is one of the low points. I OD'd on Matrix-related bullet-time spoofs 12 years ago and have never recovered.

reply

hahahahaha holy crap thats so amazing.

rwsmith29456 is the perfect example of the problem with this movie.

The extremely unfunny cow scene for some reason is funny to people who did not like the rest of the movie.

I found the cow scene to make absolutely no sense and not in a good way. I dont get why its funny, but i think its just cause people might think it funny to watch a cow fight someone.

I mean, the milk bullet time sequence was sooo lame.

It sucks cause i have so little respect for people who think that scene is funny. I have a prejudice against them feeling that they are kinda dumb lol. Why is it a funny scene when it makes no sense, does not work in the movie. It just kinda happened.

I don't really have respect for anyone who cant find comedy in this movie. I have honestly found that people who dont like this movie, are people i know who arent very intelligent. Not always but like 99/100 lol.

reply

"I have a prejudice against them feeling that they are kinda dumb lol."

I'm sure people feel the same way about you.

"Why is it a funny scene when it makes no sense, does not work in the movie. It just kinda happened."

I didn't find it that funny, but there were certain things, like when the cow kicks him and he goes flying back, that I laughed at. Mainly because I thought of it as a reference to the incredibly stupid physics of fights in shows like Dragonball Z and other over-the-top anime, where it's almost a cliche.

Other than that, the scene isn't that funny at all, but to feel prejudiced against people, thinking they're stupid for liking it, is one of the most stupid things you could possibly do.

reply

The problem with the film is the way it was marketed. The cow scene was in the trailer so obviously those who saw the trailer and were interested in the movie because of that went to watch the film and were obviously looking for more of it.

This film would have been an 8 around here if it had been marketed properly. It is probable that there were more people who went to see it that shouldn't have than people who missed it and should've seen it. Personally I watched it kind of randomly and I am glad. I remember seeing the trailer in the movie theaters and it turned me off quite a little...

Comparing golden delicious to granny Smiths . . now that's just wacky! One's yellow with an occasional hint of green, and one's like, totally yellow-green! I can't believe they're both called "apples."

I went to Matti-666's message board to see what comedies he likes...apparently none.

Plotholes are like Bigfoot, people who claim to see them are just trying to stir things up.

reply

OH...MY...WORD. good lord, man, do u have NO sense of humour? that was the funniest fr3&k3n show ive EVER seen!
i mean, besides the insanely funny script- acting of steve "the chosen one" Oedekerk- cwazy ideas carried out in the funny script and rAWr story line, the fact that it was all based on a original japanese movie IS KEWL! they didnt even add many people in it.
THIS SHOW ROCKS AND IF U CANT SEE THAT, then i have one question:
whats wrong with you? O_o

reply

yes, its a silly and stupid movie, but hey, if it is your kind of humor, fine, enjoy it.

reply

Man, if you're gonna defend something...learn to type. Seriously. Trying to navigate my way through your reply was almost as hard as sitting through the first 40 minutes of this film (which I could barely do).

P.S. This movie sucked more balls than The Fog remake. And that's a lot of balls.

reply

"P.S. This movie sucked more balls than The Fog remake. And that's a lot of balls."

Thats a lot of nuts!!!

reply

i give it a 10 out of 10 and 3 thumbs up. it is one of few films that kept me interested the whole way through. the whole movie consists of random jokes that some how connects with one another. so to all the people that hate this movie....My finger points!

reply

Please don't tell me where that third thumb came from, then again you probably won't, that post was done last year.

O yes, and this movie kicks your ass, if you have one. Badly phrased/quoted references ftw. amirite?

reply

If you've got an ass, I'll kick it! (I think) you were close enough LOL

As for the movie, it is amazing. I don't think my friends and I have laughed so much or so hard at a movie before. But people have different tastes in comedy. So obviously it's not for everyone. :P

THATS ALLOTA NUTS!!!

I agree. Learn to type. You make people who appreciate this film look bad.

Now for a cogent defense.

This was a remarkable editing accomplishment, and a spot-on exaggerated parody of Hong Kong martial arts films. The humor consistantly evokes Python-esque levels of absurdity, and while at points becomes borderline irritating, I think that most of it is appropriate and well executed.

Furthermore, the irritating parts are the purest form of parody of both the genre, and the on-screen antics of the actors in the source film ("Tiger & Crane Fists"). These scenes (e.g. the weeeyoooweeeyooo scenes) are also generally resolved in a gratifying way.

Lastly, I must admit that a large part of the reason I personally liked this film as much as I did is because the previews looked horrendous, and I refused to endorse such stupidity in filmmaking. In other words, I assumed it was TERRIBLE. Much Much later, a friend pretty much forced me to watch it one night, and VERY skeptical, I agreed.

I was blown away. To me, it was the most refreshingly funny thing I've seen in many years, and actually a pretty cool movie beyond its silliness.

I almost don't understand how someone could not find this funny.

But then I don't like seinfeld or ben stiller.

...so obviously I'M the weird one.

reply

"But then I don't like seinfeld or ben stiller.

You are not weird at all. Seinfeld and Ben Stiller sucks monkey balls.

I love the "That's A Lot Of Nuts!" replies!

Plotholes are like Bigfoot, people who claim to see them are just trying to stir things up.

reply

Putting aside the merits of this movie, that has got to be one of the stupidest entries I've seen on a message board in quite some time.

You don't even know enough about the movie to know it's a parody of a CHINESE movie (Kung Fu is Chinese, genius).

Either you have the intellect of a 2-year-old who's fallen on its head too many times, or you're intentionally misspelling the word "cool" in a pathetic, idiotic attempt to be cool.

reply

I agree. I thought it would be good but boy does this movie suck or what. I mean its really bad especially that stupid tongue. Kung fu Hustle is 100 times better now that was a good movie. I though Kung pow would be good two and just watched it 3 days ago. It was so crap! The whole just blows and its a pitty because it have been one of those funny stupid comedies, instead it was just stupid and nit funny at all. ZERO out of 10.

reply

I'm convinced Steve Chow wrote this review after making Kung Fu Hustle, and coming to the realization that no matter how much money he is budgeted, he will never be able to make a film 1/100th as funny as Kung Pao (and I liked 'Hustle' and loved 'Soccer.')

I've given up defending movies after years of futiley arguing the merrits of films like Spies Like Us, Zoolander, and Napoleon Dynamite with people who just didn't get them.

reply

[deleted]

Kung Fu Hustle is seriously not funny. It is stupid, but not in the same way as Kung Pow. It was one of the worst movies i've ever seen.

reply

ill argeed what he/she has to say. this is funny film ive seen. cant wait for new one to realsed

reply

Did you ever notice that for any significant movie in IMDB there is ALWAYS a d**khead starting a message thread called "worst movie ever" or something, just to attract everyone else's attention?

And that he/she NEVER replies to those who defend that particular movie in the thread?

Now we have an answer for the questions: "DEFINE A MORON" and "DEFINE A LOSER"

reply

Oh wow!!!! Shut up before I literally stab you with a spoon. This thing was the most horrible piece of.... Oh my gosh!!!!! Die!!! Steve Odejerk for making this crap!(Get it Odejerk that was clever wasn't it) I can't understand why any carbon based life form in full possession of their faculties (aka any human being who has the sense they were born with) could find this mess even the slightest bit funny. Are you high!!! You're sitting on your couch with bong eating pop tarts right now aren't you? I can't even go on anymore.

But I mean I know the movie was supposed to be stupid, an effort which it certainly achieved but it wasn't even an entertaining satire of old karate movies it was a 5 year old's brain trip before he lost interest in it.

reply

This movie is so funny it made me cry. I own it, havent watched it in about 5/6 years but when i read all the quotes i started to tear up again. maybe its because I have emotional problems and when Lings father died I wanted to crawl in my comforter and sleep for weeks. This film is on the same level of "Last Tango In paris" "I am curious, Yellow" and "Dragnet". For any of who you saw the preview of Kung Poa Enter the Fist and thought it looked awesome only to hate it, well then, you are just one uneducated foolish person.

What you should realize is that the whole film is brilliant.

See, first of all, half of the whole movie was old footage from an old Hong Kong film no one has heard of. And Steve Odekerk studied the whole film so he could take away the original audio that was important to the story of the old film, and create new diologe or add digital effects or new footage to make it look like something else was going on. Take the part where Master Tang was standing next to the bed while Ling's father was dying. Tang starts to rub his right breast for a few moments, which is some sort of old Chinese healing method, but Steve Odekerk put diollge in such a "Don't spoil it, this works for both of us!" to make it seem like Tang was gay.

And all the other little things that were funny in that way were great too.

"My finger points."

The sqeaky shoes.

The moth. That was absolutely hilarious.

reply

I agree with mysterium. I also think he seems to be the only smart person who posted something on this idiotic criticim thread of a great film.
See, what most of you who didn't like the movie are forgetting, is that this movie is not supposed to be smart...and that is exactly what makes it great and smart.
It is filled with little funny moments that make you want to rewatch the movie, and every time you watch it again you discover new funny moments that you missed before.
I would put this movie right up there with "Naked Gun" and "Hot Shots 2" among the funniest movies i've ever seen.
Oedekerk is a genius. I'm looking forward to the sequel.

reply

Wow!

You really got the point across there...

I mean how clever. Taking the original dialogue & replacing it with utter garbage.
Taking the original film and replacing digital effects.

How marvelous. Utter briliance.... If you're 8 years old.

Oh, & by the way, the original dialogue to this film wasn't important to the original film. It never is with Hong Kong movies. What's important is how the lead star kicks the siht out of the bad guys.
In fact, the original dialogue was funnier than Steve's lame effort. I've heard it!

I understand the film perfectly, and I won't argue that it's technically brilliant. But that doesn't make it any less stupid or unfunny. Thanks to a room mate of mine in college, I saw this piece of crap about 20 times in two weeks. It sucked the first time I saw it and it sucked the last time.

I'm not some movie snob that hates dumb comedy. I like the Super Troopers and Dumb and Dumbers as much as I like hairbrained *beep* like Monty Python. I love spoofs, whether its from Mel Brooks or Scary Movie. I like The Big Lebowski, Bill and Ted, Death to Smoochy, Hot Fuzz, Ferris Bueller, Dr Strangelove, American Pie, A Fish Called Wanda, and I even like the much maligned Nothing But Trouble (the one with Dan Aykroyd, Chevy Chase, and Demi Moore).

But Kung Pow just plain sucked. It sucked as a stupid movie and it sucked as a clever spoof. I didn't laugh a single time.

reply

If you like this movie thats fine. However, I most certainly did not. This movie was the only movie ever that I wasn't able to finish. In fact I shut off the movie like 10 minutes after it started. Maybe it gets better later on. I didn't want to take that chance.

reply

i think the problem is that when you compare movies like Kung Pow to other movies you like, and it doesn't measure up to your favorite movie's standards, it makes Kung Pow look cheap in comparison.

It's not Birdcage. Nor is it Good Will Hunting. At least it's not trying to be. Not liking a movie doesn't mean it sucks. It just means you don't like it.

I liked it. A lot. So much that my friend's daily dialogue consist of quotes from the movie!

Too bad some of you didn't like it. But hey, there are better movies out there. ^__^

reply

KUNG POW IS AMAZING!

you cant compare Kung Pow to any other movie, yeah. its one of the STUPIDEST movies ever. thats the POINT. the dialogue is COMPLETELY uncalled for. but thats why you're laughing. if you're sitting there thinking "i dont understand how this is funny"... you're thinking too damn hard.

reply

Easily one of the funniest parodies ever..

reply

Well, what can I say... The guy who wrote something about using quotes from the movie in his everyday vocabulary kinda summed up how you separate the good comedies from the bad ones. And I also use loads of quotes from Kung Pow along with my friends when we talk. I mean, how can you NOT say "Yes, yes, play me like a drum" if you cough an someone pads you on the back? There's like no escape! So, in other words - I loved this movie! Sure, like Austin Powers, I think that the movie would have gone from great to brilliant if it had been a half an hour shorter. Sure, sure, then people would have critisized it for being too short, but hey! That's how I feel about it. Most of my friends liked it, and some thought it was an ok movie, nothing more, but they ALL laughed at "That's alot of nuts!" (how can you not?) and when the mayor (or whatever), Betty and his thugs walk down the street and that guy comes up to them and says "Hey guys, what's goin' on?" and then gets struck down. I, on the other hand, laughed all the time. Another favourite moment: "What do you get when you cross an owl with a bungycord? ...... My ass! (everybody laughs) ENOUGH! (everybody stops laughing)" Great! A crowd pleaser. Well, even if you didn't find this movie to be one of the best comedies ever made, you should at least give Steve Oedekerk credit for all the work he put into it.

Vaya con dios.
