I think the movie was to a great extent about the disconnectedness between people and I came away with the impression that masturbation was her preferred and perhaps only way to experience an orgasm. Because she wanted to take her power back. I think most women who have been raped get that scene. Rape is about power not sex. I know two women who had orgasms while being raped. It just happened. They couldn't control it; didn't want it -- maybe the fear had something to do with it, who knows? One woman was withdrawing from narcotics and that can make you so sensitive it takes very little to climax (for some people). The other was not on drugs or drunk or anything and was gang-raped by I think five men.

shareIn the end I was VERY disappointed with the way this movie ended. It was obvious from the scene when she locked herself in the bathroom that they were mutually attracted to each other. So, why was she so afraid to connect with him? Why did she stubbornly cling to their "deal", when it was obvious that the only reason he agreed to it was because he hoped in the end to win her over? And it worked; she wanted him too, but she was afraid. I think if she had allowed them to connect, the whole experience would have been mutually fulfilling. As it stands, in the end we saw his frustration manifest itself in a very bad way. Maybe she was just a control freak.
On another note, I think the scene when Carla Gugino as Florence's friend showed up at their hotel room with the black eye was a golden opportunity for an amazing threesome that was totally wasted!

I believe it has nothing to do with "so call" rape. If you paid attention he did that out of sheer anger and frustration for her not feeling anything for him, not as a act of violence. An orgasm during rape is just basic biology. I would guess that in the hundred-thousand plus years of mankind's tribal existence, rape was a very common way for a woman to get pregnant. Rape by a high-status member of the tribe was not so dangerous, since a woman would still receive some protection from the tribe if she became pregnant, but rape by a man of low status or (God forbid) an outsider from the tribe was fraught with danger, since the raped woman could be rejected from the tribe and be forced to try to support herself and her new baby in the wild with a high percentage of probable disastrous consequences. So rape.....like everything else about our social interactions.....was a very complex business.
