Pronounciation of 'Tomie'

Being a native born American, I'm tempted to pronounce her name as "Tommy." But in the movies that didn't quite sound like what they were calling her. It sounded more like toe-may-uh. Can someone provide me with
1. the correct pronunciation (phonictically if possible, or a word that rhymes with her name) and
2. the English translation of her name, it there is one.

Thanks,
George

It's pronounced "Toh-Mee-Eh". I'm not sure what the English translation is though.

"I just bought Aquamarine on DVD, it's about this girl who's like, half sushi."

Thanks Oki,

If I could bug you once more about the pronunciation - Where is the accent (emphasized/highest syllable)?

Is it

TOH-mee-eh

or
toh-MEE-eh

or
toh-mee-EH?

I just want to say it right and appear to know what I'm talking about. :)

It's one of my favorite horror series.

Thanks again,
George

Interesting.

Thanks.

Old post is old, but that is incorrect. It's not as pronounced as English words' would be, but it's definitely there.

Hashi and sake are two of the most commonly cited homonyms that confuse native English speakers when learning Japanese.

As is usually the case in Japanese, the first syllable is emphasized.

"Passion is just insanity in a cashmere sweater!"

Thanks for the response. But amongst all the responses, I'm still left not knowing the proper pronunciation. I'll just have to listen more closely the next time I see one of the movies, again.

Thanks.
