I just seen the movie and always enjoy watching it when its on. I was just curious as to what the purpose of his character. I know he sold Desi the balloon and told her it fulfils wishes but after they let the ballon go he is shown in a different scene at the lake looking at the ballon. Was just curious as to was his character supposed to represent a spirtual meaning and just to mystery.

Was just curious. I loved the movie and message it gives. enjoyed that is was based on real life events.

wondered that also. did the film suggest he was an angel, or just a friendly man hopping jobs who took a liking to little desi? I think we're supposed to believe that he was an angel, looking after the child.

I to wondered that. It doesnt suggest either way. Surely we arent suppose to think that he sold her the ballon and just happen to be fishing and see the balloon go by. thanks for the reply ebert_jr

I think it was just a bad narative device lol but it was sweet.

I think he might've suppossed to have been slightly magic (but maybe just through life experience- e.g. observing people through his jobs) , and could see that desi needed help.

My guess is that he is an Angel in the story, first he is the Baloon guy, then he is a Fisherman right at Mermaid lake watching the balloon go by and finally he is the Mailman that delvers the letter from Mermaid Canada.

Fun fact: Blu Mankuma and Jodelle Ferland were both in the pilot episode of Dead Like Me.
