Bad idea!

There are several problems with this film:

1. The Casting: Tom Berenger is undoubtfully miscast. The character in the novel is much more passionate and nostalgic. Tom seems stoic and wooden. Viggo would have been a better choice. On the other hand, Rod Steiger fits in perfectly. So does David Proval as Charlie.

2. The Script: Leon de Winter is a very good, entertaining writer. His novel is always interesting and easy to read. His plotting is fabulous and the characters multidimensional. Everything that the script is not.
It seem as de Winter has had too much of a self-understanding of the novel, when he was writing the script. If you haven't read his book, the plotholes in the script are painfully obvious.

It is sad that another good novel has been made into an at best mediocre film. It might have come out to be better in the hands of others.
